USGS SELECTS INFORMATICA DATA INTEGRATION PLATFORM

Will help federal agency to make insightful, fast, and consistent decisions

to improve operational efficiency and enhance service to citizens

PALO ALTO, Calif., August 28, 2001 — Informatica Corporation (NASDAQ: INFA), the leading provider of enterprise analytic software, today announced that the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the nation’s earth and natural sciences agency, has chosen the Informatica data integration platform to extract and integrate critical data for analysis from its water-resources programs. The platform will enhance the federal agency’s ability to make fast and consistent decisions, helping transform it into a performance-based, results-oriented, customer-centric organization.

Sought out by thousands of partners and customers for its natural science expertise and its vast earth and biological data holdings, the USGS provides information to help understand how to resolve complex natural resource problems across the nation and around the world. The Informatica data integration platform enables the USGS to gather information from a wide array of complicated back-end systems, extract relevant data components, and then transform this information into a common format. This information is then prepared for data warehousing applications to enable clear-sighted, cross-functional analysis.

"Our team routinely accesses data from a wide cross section of providers. In many cases, they store their information in disparate systems with unique formats and reference systems," said Harry House, leader of the USGS Database Application Team in the Survey’s Wisconsin Water Resources office. "These systems often need to be resolved into a new common format in accordance with user requirements, which often involves complex transformations that need to be documented and stored for later reuse. We determined that Informatica offered the most robust data integration software available to support our needs."

"Informatica is dedicated to delivering solutions that meet federal agencies’ requirements to report consistent metrics year over year," said Diaz Nesamoney, president and COO of Informatica Corporation. "Informatica data integration software will help the USGS to increase internal operating efficiencies and, most importantly, meet the needs of its customers in a more timely fashion."

Created by an act of Congress in 1879, the USGS has evolved over the ensuing 120 years, matching its talent and knowledge to the progress of science and technology. Today, the USGS stands as the sole science agency for the Department of the Interior. To date, there are 10,000 scientists, technicians, and support staff of the USGS located in nearly 400 offices in every state and in several foreign countries.
