Cognos® Sales Win: Cognos Announces Large Reporting Deal with Boeing Company

- Aerospace giant to deploy Cognos reporting solution to over 11,000 users -

BURLINGTON, MA, July 16, 2001—Cognos (Nasdaq:COGN ; TSE:CSN), the leading provider of business intelligence (BI) solutions announced today that The Boeing Company has chosen to deploy Cognos Impromptu Web Reports® to 11,500 users in its Boeing Commercial Airplanes business unit. Cognos recognized the license revenue for this sale in its fiscal first quarter, with additional support and services revenue recognized on later dates.

The DCAC/MRM (Define and Control Aircraft Configuration/Manufacturing Resource Management) program in Commercial Airplanes is developing a reporting infrastructure to meet its decision support needs. Using Cognos Impromptu Web ReportsŪ, users at Boeing will be able to generate Web-enabled reports on the Bill of Materials database, an extensive data repository on plane components. The reports will provide analytical information to Boeing employees such as parts and assembly information; customer inspection data; wiring information; and supplier usage.

Boeing will initially deploy the Cognos solution for its 757 program, which supports over 5,800 end users, and across the remaining airplane programs over the next few years. Employees of the aerospace industry leader will use Cognos' BI solution to report on volumes of data—as each airplane is custom-built and contains several million components. Boeing expects the solution will save substantial person hours previously spent building manual reports.

"The agreement with Boeing underlines the enterprise nature of Cognos reporting solutions," said Terry Hall, Cognos senior vice president, operations and chief operating officer. "Cognos reporting is part of our comprehensive business intelligence solution designed to help drive effective decision-making for industry leaders."
