Unisys and SAS Demonstrate New Levels of Scalability On Windows Datacenter Server

CARY, N.C. & BLUE BELL, Pa.--Feb. 18, 2002

Companies can uncover valuable business insights in large corporate databases SAS Institute, the leader in business intelligence and data warehousing, and Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) today announced that the companies have successfully demonstrated near linear scalability of SAS WebHound(TM) software on the Unisys ES7000 to 16 CPUs. The results go well beyond the previous Intel/Windows threshold of 8 CPUs, and demonstrate that more CPUs configured and available, provide more saving in total processing time, reduce processing cost and increase the customer's ability to act on their raw data. Also, increasing the workloads by processing more files and/or larger files increases the benefits of time savings and scalability provided with the ES7000 hardware.

Unisys and SAS collaborated at the Unisys Center of Excellence at SAS corporate headquarters in Cary, North Carolina to test and characterize the performance of the SAS WebHound Web analytics solution on a 16 CPU Unisys ES7000 server running Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server operating system. The testing showed that WebHound software scales to take advantage of the available number of CPUs in these tests. Test results proved that the ES7000 system took LESS time to process each of the three WebHound phases (Extract, Load and Report) for small, medium and large workloads. SAS running on the ES7000 confirms that Intel/Windows-based systems can scale to meet the needs of high performance analytical applications. An ideal scenario for WebHound on an ES7000 would be to combine it with other applications (SAS or non SAS), which may be running out of headroom on smaller systems such as two 4-way processors, two 8-way processors or a single 8-way processor.

"These results confirm that SAS customers can achieve new levels of performance on Intel-based Windows systems," said Mike Thomas, vice president of Global Partners at Unisys. "The ES7000 enables SAS customers to scale their applications while continuing to take advantage of the ROI of industry standard systems."

Paul Bachteal, SAS director of Platform Technology Partners added, "The ES7000 offers new levels of flexibility, reliability and scalability for SAS customers. The system can grow to meet increased customer needs as customers' data sizes expand. SAS WebHound uses clickstream analysis to provide a comprehensive web analytics solution to optimize the effectiveness of corporate Internet and intranet web sites. The ability to analyze even massive amounts of data in a timely manner is critical to the business' success, particularly to optimize e-commerce revenues."
