Ascential Software Introduces MetaRecon Product That Slashes Implementation Time for Data Integration Projects

— Combines with DataStage and INTEGRITY to Further Extend Industry's Most Comprehensive Enterprise Data Integration Product Suite —

WESTBORO, Mass. — April 3, 2002 — Ascential Software Corp. (NASDAQ: ASCL) further expanded its leadership in the enterprise data integration market today with the introduction of MetaRecon®, the industry's most advanced data profiling and analysis solution. Data profiling is a necessary step in deciphering data from disparate information systems and mapping it into a common format for easier, more productive re-use in new applications.

MetaRecon ("recon" for "reconnaissance") automates the labor-intensive process of deciphering the content and meaning of terabytes of data from disparate information systems - an important first step in integrating data for enterprise applications. Through automation, the product can reduce an IT department's typical 6-to-9-month manual data profiling task to weeks or days - a 10X or more productivity boost. This, in turn, can significantly slash the overall implementation time for a typical enterprise data integration project. Data integration provides a necessary foundation for successfully deploying large-scale enterprise applications, such as customer relationship management, business intelligence, data warehousing, e-business and supply chain management.

MetaRecon, the new data profiling product, further extends Ascential's suite of products, which already comprise the industry's most comprehensive, highest performance and most scalable data integration solution. The suite, already integrated, includes Ascential's DataStage™ products, the INTEGRITY™ products, and now, the MetaRecon product. (See today's press release, "Ascential Software Completes Acquisition of Data Quality Leader Vality Technology Incorporated.")

"MetaRecon marks another milestone for Ascential as we extend our data integration technology and market leadership even further," said Ascential President Pete Fiore. "We are now the only vendor in the market to simplify and ensure the successful deployment of data intensive enterprise applications by offering products that span the entire range of data integration functions within a single, fully integrated product suite."

MetaRecon also enables more complete data profiling than manual procedures. This ensures that more accurate, relevant data is in fact used by a business, rather than putting "bad data" into an information system or business application ("garbage-in/garbage-out").

Available immediately, the MetaRecon product and associated technology was acquired in a $4.6 million technology purchase from Metagenix Inc. of Durham, NC, which gives Ascential exclusive ownership of all technology and intellectual property related to MetaRecon.

Analyst and Customer Viewpoints
"Data profiling tools are the latest catalyst for enterprise application deployments," said Doug Laney, META Group vice president, Application Delivery Strategies. "Data profiling provides enterprises with tremendous insight into the state of their data before they even begin a data integration or data quality process. This can dramatically reduce time and effort and increase the chance of a successful project."

"As a global systems integrator specializing in Enterprise Solutions, we view high quality data as critical to the success of the enterprise applications we deploy for clients," said Bob Doyle, vice president of CRM and Business Intelligence solutions of Computer Horizons Inc. "We have been providing proactive data quality and cleansing solutions to our clients leveraging the functionality of not only MetaRecon, but INTEGRITY and DataStage as well. We welcome Ascential's introduction of MetaRecon and look forward to its simplifying and reducing time-to-market for us through an integrated product set in support of our data quality and cleansing methodology."
