COMSHARE ® LAUNCHES BREAKTHROUGH RELEASE OF COMSHARE MPC™

New Functionality Helps Companies Align Resources with Strategic Initiatives and Addresses Accounting and Reporting Concerns

Ann Arbor, Michigan, October 07, 2002 -- Comshare, Incorporated (NASDAQ: CSRE), a leader in software applications for corporate performance management (CPM), announced today that it has built new functionality into the new 5.0 release of its Comshare MPC™ application that will help companies meet more stringent reporting requirements. Comshare MPC 5.0 also delivers more detailed budgeting functionality, additional Microsoft business intelligence (BI) platform features, and a host of improvements to further increase the ease of maintenance and usability of this robust application for CPM.

“This release is a breakthrough for Comshare customers because it addresses accounting concerns that have resulted from current economic conditions such as statutory reporting, changing Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulations, the need for increased insight into organizational operations and globalization,” said Rod Radojevic, Product Marketing Manager, Comshare. “It facilitates closing the books, while adding additional planning, analysis, and reporting capabilities so organizations can examine key costs and initiatives, including better employee and asset planning.”

Detail Tracking of Employees and Assets is Key in Today’s Economy
For most organizations, employees and assets make up a significant portion of total expenses. Comshare MPC helps companies plan down to the individual employee and asset level and across activities to better manage those resources.

“With Comshare MPC 5.0 businesses can plan, budget, and forecast in a variety of ways across multiple dimensions — by management structure and by strategic initiative, for example — helping them run and manage the business effectively,” Radojevic said. “This new functionality helps organizations with activity-based budgeting requirements by aligning their resources — especially employees and assets — with strategic initiatives, while providing them other traditional ways of planning, such as by management structure or geography.” The SEC has shortened reporting deadlines for public companies and legislation has been instituted requiring senior management to certify financial data. Comshare MPC is a solution that can help close the books faster and more accurately, through better analysis. New Comshare MPC 5.0 functionality supports other key reporting and analysis needs such as:

  • Enhanced detail budgeting and configurable data entry and reporting templates to better link budgets to strategy while increasing productivity.
  • Improved report readability and maintenance with new charting capabilities and unique member IDs.
  • Increased understanding of plans and forecasts with currency translation functionality.
  • Powerful Excel functionality with the introduction of text notes, dynamic data entry, range properties and formulas and a new “save” feature.
  • Enhanced strategic planning with new editable templates, better financial intelligence, and hierarchical selection of dimension members and periods.
  • Strengthened production reporting with multidimensional security, new schedule lines and unique member IDs.
  • Greater security, data loading and set up options with security access restrictions, security reports, a new import/export wizard, and drag-and-drop functionality.

Here’s What Customers Have to Say
J. Lauritzen, a leader in the international shipping market, was an early adopter of Comshare MPC 5.0 using Microsoft's BI platform. For J. Lauritzen, the new intercompany elimination capability and rich currency support are important new components.

"Comshare MPC has been very impressive in meeting our complex currency handling requirements for budgeting and actual reporting,” said Erik Bierre, Sr. Vice President, J. Lauritzen A/S. “And it gave us the ability to budget intercompany activity by trade currency — a major benefit to our operations. Comshare understood our requirements and delivered that functionality in this release.” Tempus Resorts International, Ltd., a leader in the competitive vacation ownership industry, evaluated the new release’s security, balanced journals, and Excel integration features.

“Comshare MPC 5.0 strengthens the integrity of data used for financial reporting,” said Alison Walls, Corporate Controller, Tempus Resorts. “It gives our GAAP data reliability so we use Comshare MPC to prepare financial reports for our annual audit. And the security function is efficient and saves time. For example, I can set up one profile with specific access that can be applied to a group of users. With such enhanced security, we’re more likely to get this to more users.”

Cheryl Davies, Corporate Analyst, Tempus Resorts, evaluated the more robust Excel integration features. “Comshare MPC allows me to present information to managers and the executive committee with the flexibility they’re used to in Excel,” said Davies. “Excel integration, coupled with the stability of the centralized Comshare MPC database, also assures me that the numbers are correct and consistent.”

Comshare MPC Using the Microsoft BI Platform Gives Power and Speed
“Comshare. MPC 5.0 using Microsoft's BI platform, which includes SQL Server, .NET, Office for XP and Analysis Services, is taking corporate performance management to new levels,” said Dave King, Sr. Vice President and CTO for Comshare. “Our new formula building interface simplifies the definition and maintenance of Microsoft Analysis Services formulas. Enhancements in currency translations and forecasting extend the use of the Microsoft BI platform.”

Comshare MPC’s forecasting module is also available on the Microsoft BI platform with this release. It uses objective time-series techniques to generate statistically accurate forecasts within minutes. With it, organizations can seed budgets with minimum time and effort; automatically generate rolling forecasts; verify the accuracy of user-submitted plans; minimize organizational bias during budgeting and forecasting; and receive automatic alerts about potential deviations from the budget. The sophisticated forecasting engine automatically selects the optimum method without requiring any statistical expertise on the part of the user.
