Advanced Analytical Software Aids Law Enforcement

Visual Analytics Systems Provide Quick Access and Advanced Analytical Capabilities to Analyze Criminal Data

POOLESVILLE, Md., Oct. 21, 2002 -- Visual Analytics, Inc. (VAI), a leading provider of award-winning best-of-breed analytical and visualization software, has implemented an advanced visual data mining solution at the Philadelphia/Camden (P/C) High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA). VAI's integrated products, VisuaLinks(TM) and Digital Information Gateway(TM) (DIG), are being used to support the analysis and investigation of drug related activities and other related criminal behaviors.

HIDTAs are federally funded organizations focused on fostering cooperation among law enforcement agencies in different regions located throughout the United States. They serve as regional task forces staffed with a diverse set of local law enforcement representatives from federal, state, and local agencies.

VAI's advanced visual data mining solution at the P/C HIDTA serves to connect data among several disparate data sources (currently 6 with at least a dozen planned) and disseminate appropriately screened information to affiliate organizations including: Pennsylvania AG's office, DEA, FBI, ATF, IRS, US Postal Service, Camden County Prosecutors Office, Philadelphia Police, HIDTA Watch Center, Philadelphia DA's Office, and the Baltimore/Washington HIDTA.

"With VisuaLinks & DIG, data from all our databases is available in real time to the people that need it most. We're now getting usable results in seconds rather than hours or days. The more information officers have in real time; the better decisions they're able to make out in the field... additionally, we can share data with any agency we deem appropriate whether they're local or across the country." -- Wayne Comer -- Director.

"...just this morning, (September 2002) someone from the AG's office called us looking for some information... they were quite surprised when we gave them detailed results within a few minutes. DIG found matches in two of our six databases currently online. As a result of this information, we were able to put the Philadelphia homicide division together with the agents of the attorney generals office who originally requested the information." -- Bob Dintino -- Special Investigator.

The P/C HIDTA project was sponsored by a grant from the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) under their Counter-drug Technology Assessment Center (CTAC) program. The CTAC program helps fund transfers of advanced technologies to local law agencies. See http://www.epgctac.com/ for more details on this program.

VisuaLinks(TM) offers a complete analytical solution by addressing the entire process from real-time database searches and pattern detection to final chart presentation.

Digital Information Gateway(TM) (DIG) is an information portal that can search free-text/office documents, relational databases, and web sites for keyword terms and provides capabilities to help organize and analyze the results of the searches.
