Intergraph Advances Linear Referencing and Dynamic Segmentation with Release of GeoMedia 5.0 Transportation Products

Enhanced products designed for critical decision support showcased at HEEP

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Sept. 5, 2002 - Intergraph Mapping and GIS Solutions today announced it has released version 5.0 of GeoMedia(R) Transportation Manager and GeoMedia Transportation Analyst, two GIS products built on proven GeoMedia technology. These products deliver enhanced workflow functionality and geospatial infrastructure management capabilities for professionals in departments of transportation (DOTs), rail agencies, pipeline operations, and transportation support organizations. New features in GeoMedia 5.0 transportation products, such as linear referencing system (LRS) calibration and dynamic segmentation offset and rotation, simplify and speed the development, maintenance, and analysis of a transportation LRS. An LRS enables an operator to define a feature or location by its linear distance from a known point on a linear network.

At the International Highway Engineering Exchange Program (HEEP) Conference in St. Louis, September 15 - 19, Intergraph will showcase the expanded GeoMedia transportation products (Booths 9 & 10). Demonstrations will show how professionals gain immediate access to roadway project, asset, and event information along the transportation network.

"Intergraph's GeoMedia 5.0 transportation products are providing boosted performance for our team of GIS users," said Tim Callahan, GIS manager, Oklahoma Department of Transportation (OKDOT.) "We've seen big time-savings from the software's dynamic segmentation and network validation features. These new capabilities replace the typically time-consuming task of digitizing information before sharing it across the department. Now, OKDOT users can automatically and accurately distribute information, such as road inventory, median types, average daily traffic, crashes, and bridge data."

With GeoMedia transportation products, Intergraph has solved the decade-old GIS problem of accurately maintaining relationships between attributes and individual segments of long linear features such as highways, rail lines, runways, pipelines, and waterways. Creating map features representing pavement conditions, accident data, and average daily traffic helps provide business-critical information for accurate decision making. With this kind of information, professionals can make immediate improvements to the transportation network, plan and budget future improvements, and provide critical details accurately to project participants.

Expediting LRS creation, maintenance, and analysis

Intergraph's GeoMedia Transportation Manager offers state-of-the-art functionality to create, edit, validate, and, now, calibrate an LRS quickly and easily. With new calibration capabilities, operators can fill in route name and measure values to build an LRS from raw linework or add or edit measures to update and recalculate routes. For example, if construction eliminates a sharp bend in a route, the LRS calibration command would automatically adjust the measures on the route beginning at the construction zone.

Dynamic segmentation enables users to visualize the organization's inventory of assets more clearly than by simply reviewing tabular data. Improved dynamic segmentation capabilities offer the ability to offset events manually or through attribution. This allows users to view various data side by side, thus expanding analysis capabilities. For example, data covering different time periods or showing different themes can be examined simultaneously. In addition, dynamic segmentation can now rotate point event data. Rotation angles can either be from the north or can be based on angles from the direction of the LRS network. This can be very useful for annotating networks with direction arrows or for showing signage from its proper angle.

Additional new features available with version 5.0 include commands such as reformat geometry collection, event creator, and coordinate-only events, and improved LRS readout and keyin capabilities.

GeoMedia transportation products provide open standards that enable government and commercial organizations to share geospatial data and applications, which allows these entities to maintain and leverage their past investment in legacy GIS products.
