SAS Enterprise Miner to Support PMML; SAS and IBM Simplify the Management and Deployment of Data Mining

CARY, N.C., Sept. 17, 2002 -- SAS, the leader in business intelligence, today announced the adoption of the Predictive Modeling Markup Language (PMML). PMML provides an effective way to define and share predictive models between compliant vendors' applications, remove incompatibility barriers that block the exchange of models between applications, streamline deployment of new applications and protect customer investments.
SAS is working closely with IBM to ensure that SAS' Enterprise Miner(TM) PMML-based output is deployable by IBM DB2 Intelligent Miner Scoring to provide a competitive parallel scoring solution with real time analytic capabilities for joint SAS and IBM DB2 customers. The relationship between SAS and IBM will enable both of the companies to deliver the power of SAS data mining for making business decisions while providing parallel scoring of massive quantities of data directly in IBM's DB2 environment.
"IBM and SAS share many core values, which include empowering our customers with the technology necessary to serve the needs of our end-users," said Anne Milley, director of Analytical Strategy at SAS. "Developing predictive modeling markup score code is significant to our customers' need for speed in analytical modeling. This type of next-generation business intelligence technology continues to offer our customers yet another competitive advantage."
"With PMML, statistical and data mining solutions can be easily moved across platforms and vendors, and scoring applications can be refreshed simply by reading a file so that the analytics are always up to date," said Robert Grossman, spokesperson, Data Mining Group (DMG) and director, National Center for Data Mining, University of Illinois at Chicago. "SAS' involvement is critical to the success of this effort and the entire DMG is excited to be working with them."
The support of PMML standards as a result of the SAS - IBM Partnership is further proof that both companies are committed to continued collaboration to support joint customers.
"Customers running SAS' Enterprise Miner PMML-based output on IBM DB2 Intelligent Miner Scoring software will enjoy the benefit of making immediate business decisions based on real time analytic capabilities and the parallel scoring of massive quantities of data so they can gain a competitive advantage," said Lauren Flaherty, vice president of marketing, IBM Data Management Solutions.
"For more than a decade, SAS has focused on answering business questions using analytical intelligence. Providing a scope of business intelligence power that no other single vendor can deliver, SAS is delivering the next generation of business intelligence," said Jim Davis, senior vice president and chief marketing officer at SAS. "SAS provides the end-to-end business intelligence infrastructure, the SAS(R) Intelligence Architecture, necessary for obtaining the highest quality information on which to base business decisions. This infrastructure, which includes data warehousing, analytic intelligence and business intelligence tools, gives organizations the agility they need to capitalize on changes in the marketplace."

    About PMML

PMML describes data mining models in the Extensible Markup Language (XML), which is the universal format for structured documents and data on the Web. PMML was designed by W3C group (http://www.w3c.org) and is managed by the Data Mining Group (http://www.dmg.org), an independent, vendor-led group, which develops data mining standards. The aim of PMML is to support the exchange of data mining models between different vendor applications. PMML also supports clustering, associations and other mining algorithms.
