Intergraph Software Grant Promotes Growth of GIS and Geospatial Practices at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona

Technology valued at more than $3.4 million (U.S.) enriches Geospatial Engineering Laboratory and GIS Center curriculum

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., April 7, 2003 - Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial Solutions today announced a software grant, valued at more than $3.4 million (U.S.), has been presented to long-time technology partner, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona), for use in its geospatial engineering laboratory and program, medical research, GIS Center and GIS certificate and masters programs. Solutions from Intergraph and Z/I Imaging, an Intergraph company, will strengthen Cal Poly Pomona's efforts in photogrammetry-supported GIS using GeoMedia(R)'s data warehousing and database development and analysis capabilities together with Z/I Imaging's suite of earth imaging and photogrammetric solutions.

The grant includes more than 20 products from Intergraph and Z/I Imaging, which will be integrated into the geospatial engineering laboratory and facilitate complete GPS data acquisition processing, total station data acquisition processing, softcopy photogrammetric data acquisition processing, GIS and remote sensing analysis, visualization and animation scene development.

Photogrammetry and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are two of the courses that will use the laboratory for a more hands-on study of the geosciences. In addition, a new course elective, Elements of Spatial Positioning, emphasizes scientific concepts and positioning techniques as they apply to geology, geography, archaeology, agriculture, oceanography and other disciplines, integrating photogrammetry, remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), global positioning systems (GPS) and 3D modeling in mapping, observation and study of natural events. The course will be offered Spring 2003 and takes full advantage of the software donation. The grant provides a platform for future generations of engineering students at Cal Poly Pomona to gain an understanding of the principles and methodology used in geospatial engineering, thus allowing these students to enter the workforce armed with the training and skills needed to propel the industry forward.

"California State Polytechnic University, Pomona has had a long and fruitful relationship with Intergraph and Z/I Imaging," explained Dr. Howard Turner, professor of Surveying and Civil Engineering. "We are grateful for the valuable opportunity to incorporate an enormous breadth of technology into our curriculum and strengthen our efforts in GIS and softcopy photogrammetry. We will also use the grant to introduce geospatial technology and principles into areas of education that are not traditionally considered geospatial-related in an effort to advance the future of the geosciences. In appreciation of Intergraph and Z/I Imaging's continued commitment to Cal Poly Pomona and the educational community, the University is naming the geospatial laboratory, The Intergraph Geospatial Engineering Laboratory."
