Crystal Decisions Recognized for Outstanding Scalability and Performance

Crystal Enterprise exhibits 'near perfect' linear scalability on the AIX 5L UNIX platform

PALO ALTO, CA, Jan. 14, 2003 - Crystal Decisions, one of the world's leading information management software companies, today announced performance test results for Crystal Enterprise on the AIX 5L UNIX platform. Stressing all aspects of the system at once, Crystal Decisions is among the first enterprise-level business intelligence solution providers to simulate real world usage and linear scalability in a lab setting.

"The importance of managing costs is a high priority and mandates predictability in an enterprise system through measurement of scalability, reliability and performance," said Mark Smith, SVP Research, Ventana Research. "Crystal Decisions' continued commitment to scalability and performance through benchmark testing demonstrates their ability to provide organizations a higher degree of confidence in managing information management solutions."

The tests demonstrate how linear scalability can be achieved in a practical environment, in which all components and tiers of the system are stressed simultaneously. Until now, vendors typically attempted to show scalability in separate component-based tests that isolated a particular activity or tier and test it exclusively. The tests on Crystal Enterprise were based on several user scenarios and represent a realistic utilization of all the aspects of the system. Key findings for Crystal Enterprise include:

- Near perfect linear scalability across multiple processors and physical machines

- Ability to handle more than 47 million requests per day

- Average user response time of less than five seconds for all operations across a wide range of configurations, ranging from 4 to 32 processors

- No performance limits identified

The rigorous testing was designed to emulate the environment and behavior of the most typical Crystal Enterprise users and large-scale deployments, enabling Crystal Decisions to determine the level of predictability the company offers its customers. The tests were conducted with Rational Suite TestStudio at the IBM Test Labs in San Mateo, Calif.

"We are pleased that Crystal Decisions has leveraged Rational Suite TestStudio to create a true-to-life testing environment for Crystal Enterprise," said Greg Meyers, vice president and general manager, Automated Software Quality Product Group, Rational Software. "By using Rational Suite TestStudio to pinpoint bottlenecks and other potential problems, Crystal Decisions has demonstrated their commitment to creating high performing solutions, and has confirmed our vision that highly-scalable performance tests should be an essential part of any multi-user application deployment."

Crystal Enterprise is a Web-based reporting, analysis and information delivery solution that enables organizations to make better use of corporate data, improve decision-making and drive business profitability. Crystal Enterprise is also the first business intelligence enterprise reporting solution to meet the strict reliability and high availability specifications necessary to earn the Microsoft Certified for Windows Advanced Server and Datacenter Server designations.

"Crystal Decisions continues to work on behalf of customers to set an industry standard for real world scalability testing in business intelligence that all vendors should strive for," said Andrew Handford, vice president of products, Crystal Decisions. "These scalability benchmarks confirm that Crystal Enterprise delivers strong performance on a wide range of hardware configurations and exhibits near perfect linear scalability - the ability to either scale up on a single machine, or scale out over a cluster - depending on a company's growth requirements. The assurance that goes along with this level of testing is particularly relevant to any company searching to invest in a mission-critical information infrastructure."
