Wacker Deploys Documentum Enterprise Content Management Platform

>German Multinational Chemical Corporation Successfully Implements Documentum Enterprise-Wide

PLEASANTON, Calif., January 13, 2003 – Documentum (Nasdaq: DCTM), the leading provider of enterprise content management (ECM) and extended enterprise collaboration (EEC), today announced that Wacker Chemie GmbH, the partner of choice for chemical applications in many global markets, has implemented the Documentum enterprise content management (ECM) platform. Wacker standardized across all divisions on the Documentum platform by replacing all stand-alone content management systems, including those for managing documents, web content and digital assets.

Arno von der Eltz, senior vice president of information technology at Wacker, describes the model on which Wacker is building its IT infrastructure, “We rely on Microsoft desktop software for our office applications, SAP for structured data and business processes, and Documentum for unstructured data and document-related processes. These three pillars provide a strong and steady foundation upon which to build our continued success.”

Wacker wanted to unite vertical content “silos” that existed across various departments within the company, and chose the Documentum ECM platform to manage all unstructured data on an enterprise-wide level. The company used Documentum to relaunch its multilingual web site, and found that Documentum makes it much easier to create, manage, deliver and archive consistent information from every division in every language on the site.

Documentum’s workflow technology improves the management of controlled content. As in most large corporations, many of Wacker’s worldwide offices generate documents that can be published only after being formally approved. In the past, depending on the locations of the parties involved, the approval process would take several days, if not weeks. Now, using the Documentum platform, all steps from the creation of a document to its publication, are automatically managed.

Wacker plans to use Documentum to manage more than 45,000 intranet sites worldwide across all divisions and branches. The company has already developed an extranet site to support the collaboration of its partners, suppliers and customers. To encourage collaboration internally, Wacker has established online communities using Documentum’s collaboration products. Previously, departments and divisions negotiated different agreements with the same suppliers; now hundreds of employees are exchanging information on negotiations and contracts and are realizing much better results in the form of lower prices and more favorable terms.

“Wacker is an excellent example of an international corporation using Documentum to connect its employees, customers, partners and suppliers much more efficiently,” said Dave DeWalt, president and chief executive officer for Documentum. “They are positioned to reap the benefits of enterprise content management on a global scale. We look forward to a lasting relationship with the company.”

Leading Chemical Companies Rely on Documentum

In addition to the Wacker Group, Documentum has more than a dozen customers in the chemicals industry, including Dow Corning and Monsanto. These companies use Documentum to meet the challenge of managing enterprise content on a global scale and complying with evolving regulations.
