Cognos extends performance system with new plan-to-perform blueprints

- Risk Analysis, Allocations and Sales Compensation models link operational and financial plans, accelerate enterprise-wide planning deployments -

ORLANDO, Fla., June 27, 2005 -- COGNOS FORUM -- Cognos (Nasdaq: COGN; TSX: CSN), the world leader in business intelligence and corporate performance management (CPM), today announced it is adding three new Plan-to-Perform Blueprints to the Cognos Performance Management Solutions offering.

Developed by the Cognos Innovation Center(TM), the Plan-to-Perform Blueprints are targeted, pre-built data, process and policy models, designed to accelerate the realization of an integrated, reliable and dynamic planning process across the enterprise. This improved enterprise planning process helps synchronize and coordinate financial and operational plans and forecast. It helps improve forecast reliability. This means that companies are able to make better resource allocation decisions in today's fast-paced and volatile business environment. The results are new opportunities to increase revenue, increase profits and better manage working capital.

The new Risk Analysis, Allocation and Sales Compensation models are based on proven best-practices in enterprise planning and define all the necessary technology and process design choices, allowing customers to jump-start their planning, budgeting and forecasting deployments across their organization:

* Sales Compensation Planning Blueprint: enables accurate, reliable sales compensation projections including salary draws and commission payouts against targets linked to revenue and headcount plans.

* Allocations Blueprint: helps organizations effectively negotiate and coordinate overhead expense allocations between cost centers and profit centers as part of an integrated enterprise planning process.

* Risk Analysis Blueprint: helps management evaluate the impact of business risk at both the divisional and corporate levels by enabling scenario planning across various risk categories (e.g. Brand, Industry, Financial) including mitigation strategies and their associated costs.

Constar International is a leading global producer of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic containers for food, carbonated beverages, sports drinks, juice, new age beverages, flavored alcohol and bottled water with 19 plants worldwide. The $ 750 million company uses Cognos Planning to streamline and strengthen an integrated planning process across sales forecasting, production planning and financial operating planning. Organizations involved in the process include: sales, purchasing, logistics, corporate production planning, plant-level production planning, corporate manufacturing accounting, plant accounting teams, and customer service.

Constar Director of Business Intelligence, Roberta Kaplan, will share the company's planning success at Cognos Forum and address its use of Plan-to-Perform Blueprints to jump-start deployments in key areas.

"As solutions, the Blueprints are aptly named. The design fits with our model of planning, which is geared towards linked, high-participation, driver- based planning that is synchronized across the organization," said Kaplan. "We are exploring the linking of our Financial Schedules model to the Strategic Financial Planning Blueprint to create integrated Balance Sheet and Cash Flow forecasts. The Capital Expenditure Planning Blueprint concepts are also being embedded in our capital project planning model as we accelerate planning projects with these valuable best-practices."

The new Blueprints models are available today. Cognos Plan-to-Perform Blueprints are also offered in the following areas: Strategic Financial Planning and Forecasting, Sales Planning and Forecasting; Expense Planning and Control; Headcount and Compensation Planning; and Capital Expenditure Planning. This, in turn, drives value across the company."
