What are characteristics of a decision support system?

Is the system a DSS? Does it really matter? Knowledge transfer and comparisons are more meaningful when we accurately classify artifacts of interest, like a decision support system. Identifying characteristics, distinguishable features, attributes or aspects of all DSSs helps distinguish them from other systems. Once accurate classification occurs, we are more likely to identify patterns and generalizations.
