The Council of the European Union Chooses Intergraph Solutions to Support Defence Planning and Operations

Enterprise system based on GeoMedia technology enables multiple departments to discover, share and exploit data

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., March 22, 2004 - The Council of the European Union, General Secretariat, has chosen Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial Solutions to deliver a GIS system to support the European Union Military Staff (EUMS). The EUMS will use Intergraph's GeoMedia(R) desktop and Web solutions to manage, query and analyze digital geographic data to support day-to-day strategic planning and operations.

Intergraph's solutions were evaluated against other system integrators and software providers in an international competitive tender where Intergraph was awarded the contract for the full system implementation. The system will enable data discovery, sharing and integration of data from different departments within a secure EUMS enterprise environment. Intergraph's proven GeoMedia technology was a match for the EUMS vision of a system based on open standards, which would deliver their key objectives including flexibility to integrate data from many different sources and formats, and extensibility to incorporate other departments or systems in the future.

The system will provide a central, accessible repository of geographic data and easy, end-user access to GIS tools and functionality. Intergraph's enterprise approach will help EUMS staff make better and faster operational and planning decisions.

The system will incorporate the specific requirements for a geo database, cartographic workshop, Web catalogue and desktop viewers. It will deliver a range of capabilities from specialist GIS functionality for EUMS technicians to maintain the geo database, to simple easy-to-use browsers and viewers for analysts and planners. The system will store data in a standard Oracle(R)9i database and integrate seamlessly with standard office automation tools, enabling spatial reports and presentations to be created and exploited for EUMS strategic planning and operational use.

The system is scheduled to go live in July 2004 in support of planned EUMS operational requirements later in the year.
