Network-wide operating room (OR) scheduling: Bio-Optronics to introduce SchedulOR at IHI

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Nov. 28, 2005 -- Scheduling cases for the OR requires more than coordinating equipment and people for a defined date and time. These physical constraints, critical to scheduling, represent only a fraction of the big picture. The other half of the equation? Business constraints, such as financial approval, consent, pre-admission testing and special patient needs, among others.

When resource or business demands aren't satisfied before the day of surgery, everyone suffers. Hospital staff are stuck with the burden of locating people, equipment, and paperwork at the last minute. Then there's the empty operating room, draining hospital revenue and staff time as effectively as a sieve. This scenario, which plays out in thousands of operating rooms across the country on a daily basis, can be eliminated with a new scheduling application from Bio-Optronics, a workflow management solutions company based in Rochester, NY. SchedulOR is a component of the company's Dynamic Hospital Suite and is the first of its kind -- a resource and business constraint OR scheduling application.

SchedulOR coordinates every department involved in scheduling. Cases that are incomplete in any area will continually generate notifications to affected departments. If any requirements are not met before the day of surgery, administrative approval is required for cases to remain on the schedule. This prevents cases that, for example, lack financial approval from being scheduled when they couldn't actually be performed. How does one application coordinate so many different departments? Bio-Optronics' President, Mike Kamish, attributes SchedulOR's capabilities to its unique rules-based intelligence.

"SchedulOR, a web-based application, creates communication networks across an organization and coordinates departments with different work processes to ensure that the hospital gets the most out of its OR. It also improves work processes -- staff can make the shift from wasting time on faxes and phone calls to instantaneous communications generated by SchedulOR across the network -- saving time and money."

The company will introduce SchedulOR at the IHI 17th Annual National Forum on Quality Improvement in Healthcare in Orlando, FL, 12/11-12/14.
