Socialtext and Dan Bricklin partner on the 'social spreadsheet'

Socialtext and Dan Bricklin, Inventor of the Pioneering PC Spreadsheet VisiCalc, Will Develop and Distribute the wikiCalc(TM)'Social Spreadsheet'

PALO ALTO, Calif., June 9, 2006 -- Socialtext, the first wiki company, today announced its partnership with Dan Bricklin, the inventor of the pioneering PC spreadsheet VisiCalc. The relationship will enable Socialtext to exclusively distribute and redistribute wikiCalc to enterprise customers. The partners have committed to co-develop the product within an Open Source community. Businesses and Open Source efforts will now have an opportunity for web-based spreadsheets. wikiCalc is a "social spreadsheet" that enables organizations, small and large, to collaborate and share online. The Beta version will be released under a liberal Open Source license.

"Socialtext has been a leader in the commercial wiki world. Their commitment to social software and Open Source led me to choose them as my partner to move wikiCalc into commercial use," said Dan Bricklin, president of Software Garden, Inc. "I'm looking forward to their experienced help as we build an Open Source community around the product and to working with them to integrate wikiCalc into their other social software offerings."

"Dan Bricklin is the best innovator to work with on a social spreadsheet," Mayfield adds, "Socialtext's Open Source community and Enterprise clients will gain the ability to collaborate with structured information, which was a huge request from our partners in the financial and high-tech sector. Spreadsheets are the premiere tool most users utilize with structured information and wikiCalc brings this into the online space. When Ward Cunningham invented the wiki, one of his core principles was a collaboration platform for both experts and novice users."

Like Socialtext's Wikiwyg "what you see is what you get" Wiki editor, and the planned release of Socialtext's core product as Socialtext Open Source Edition, Socialtext's developments of wikiCalc is released under a liberal, Open Source Initiative (OSI) approved, Open Source license. Visitors to Socialtext's Open Source development site at http://www.socialtext.net/stoss/ will be able to download and install the same version used in Socialtext's commercial offerings, contribute to the development of the software, or even build new services around the core technology.
