(RSI), a global provider of customized GPS-based vehicle tracking and mobile data systems, announced today that the Richland County, South Carolina has gone live with a new GPS-based Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) system. The RSI AVL System will provide county-wide GPS tracking of their vehicles, concentrating on their public works fleets. The RSI AVL system combines GPS, two-way radio, and customized mapping software to provide real-time vehicle fleet location data to dispatchers and administrators. Richland County is home to the state capitol of Columbia and is the second most populous county in South Carolina with approximately 340,000 people. RSI and the County implemented a successful pilot system on several heavy duty vehicles and is now in the process of equipping additional vehicles for an eventual full roll out. The AVL project was spearheaded by the County's GIS (Geographic Information Systems) department, who selected RSI based on several factors including RSI's expertise in using ESRI ArcGIS 9 software. This powerful customized mapping software allows the County to view vehicle locations and status integrated with highly detailed maps and copious amounts of the County's existing geographic and infrastructure data. "Obviously AVL systems provide the great benefit of being able to track your vehicles in real time," stated RSI President Jon Michels. "However, being able to relate that vehicle data to existing customer, infrastructure, and topographical data is an invaluable tool for operations such as a public works department." Headquartered in Torrance, CA, Radio Satellite Integrators, Inc. is a world leader in the design and implementation of vehicle tracking systems using GPS, wireless communications and GIS. Founded in 1990, the company has developed and implemented more than 150 systems worldwide, with applications in a range of fields including public safety, transit, utilities, public works, schools, and other operations. RSI's global customer list includes: the US Postal Service, Microsoft, City of Long Beach, City of Austin, City of Jacksonville, Boston Water & Sewers, and many others.
