TDWI survey shows a strong demand for data warehouses built to scale to multi-terabyte range

Independent Survey Reveals a “New Slew” of Multi-Terabyte Data Warehouses, Creating New Challenges in Cost and Complexity

Framingham, Mass., June 19, 2006 — Netezza, the global data warehouse appliance leader, today announced the results of a recent survey conducted by The Data Warehouse Institute (TDWI) that underscores a growing need for data warehouses that are built to scale to the multi-terabyte range. The findings of this survey, conducted across members attending TDWI’s recent worldwide conference, indicate a market ripe for the speed, simplicity and scalability of data warehouse appliances.

Highlights from the TDWI survey data include:

36 percent of data warehouses are multi-terabyte today; 48 percent will be multi-terabyte by 2007

87 percent of warehouse data is online and queryable

Data warehouses that have traditionally started small are now starting in the multi-terabyte range

TDWI recommends “planning way ahead” for multi-terabyte milestones and demanding parallel processing on all components, both hardware and software

“This survey echoes what Netezza has been hearing throughout the marketplace. Netezza’s pioneering data warehouse appliance approach is uniquely suited to meeting the scalability challenges that companies are facing as their data and query complexity grows,” said Ellen Rubin, vice president of marketing, Netezza. “The Netezza Performance Server® appliance delivers performance, ease of use and scalability right out of the box and offers data-intensive companies a better option.”

To make it even easier for companies to scale flexibly, Netezza recently announced (http://www.netezza.com/releases/2006/release041006.htm) product and pricing innovations designed to provide customers with the greatest flexibility and choice in data warehousing as they scale their BI initiatives. By broadening its family of Netezza Performance Server (NPS®) data warehouse appliances, doubling system performance, lowering pricing and offering a new flexible growth plan, Netezza is providing customers with the only data warehouse option that enables enterprises to make all of their data actionable – quickly, simply and affordably.

“TDWI Research shows that a new slew of multi-terabyte data warehouses has arrived in recent years, and another slew is coming in late 2007,” said Philip Russom, senior manager of research at TDWI. “Data warehouses will experience on average at least 33 percent annual growth in data volumes, 50 percent or more when subject to aggressive collections of customer, supply chain, eCommerce or compliance data. Users need to plan capacity for this flood of multi-terabyte data, by relying on data warehouse platforms that are optimized out of the box for data warehouse-scale queries and expand easily with minimal administration.”

The NPS system is the market-leading data warehouse appliance, built specifically to analyze terabytes of detailed data 10 to 100 times faster than existing data warehouse options, at half the cost. The NPS system stores, filters and processes terabytes of records within a single unit, analyzing only the relevant information for each query. Netezza has placed the CPU power next to the data, allowing the NPS system to speed through processes that would occupy most data warehouse systems for hours, or even days, thereby enabling dramatic increases in productivity across the organization. Customers who have recognized the performance benefits of Netezza’s approach include Ahold, Amazon.com, Cingular Wireless, CNET Networks, Debenhams, Epsilon, Orange UK, Premier, Inc., Shoppers Drug Mart Corporation, The Carphone Warehouse and The TJX Companies.
