Polycom leverages TI DSP-based digital media processors to deliver advanced HD video communications platform

Software Upgradeable TMS320DM642 Processors Deliver High Quality Video While Supporting Future Standards and Enhancements

DALLAS and PLEASANTON, Calif., Nov. 16, 2006 -- Polycom, Inc. (Nasdaq: PLCM), the world's leading provider of unified collaborative communications solutions, has harnessed multiple, high-performance digital media processors from Texas Instruments Incorporated (NYSE: TXN) (TI) to deliver the Polycom(R) HDX 9000 series, a platform with broad flexibility and high performance to support video collaboration applications, including true high definition (HD). The Polycom HDX 9000 series enables increased productivity and efficiency that result from more lifelike virtual meetings that include HD voice, HD video and HD content sharing. (See http://www.ti.com/polycom .)

The HDX 9000 series uses multiple TI TMS320DM642 processors to handle the video processing, including compression, for both standard definition (SD) and HD people and content. Built on the proven architecture of TI's TMS320C64x(TM) generation of digital signal processors (DSPs), the DM642 devices perform real-time processing of H.264 baseline profile to provide outstanding video picture quality with true high definition resolution. Because TI processors are fully software programmable, Polycom's SD and HD products can be easily upgraded as new standards and future enhancements need to be supported.

The HDX 9000 series is a standards-based, high-performance HD video conferencing system that features industry-first capabilities such as simultaneous HD dual streams for people and content, Siren(TM)22 kHz StereoSurround(TM) audio, and broad flexibility for customizing HD video communications for specific business applications, conference rooms, custom rooms, and Polycom RPX(TM) telepresence suites and meeting environments.

"Working with TI, Polycom was able to introduce a video communications platform that delivers truly unrivaled performance, features and overall customer value," said Ed Ellett, senior vice president and general manager of video communications at Polycom. "TI has an attractive, code-compatible roadmap of high-performance processors that address both HD performance and system cost, enabling us to deliver the greatest video, audio and content detail in multimedia collaborative meetings with systems that will continue to evolve to support emerging technology."

"High definition is the future of video conferencing, and Polycom's new HD platform and video conferencing systems prove that the future is now," said Greg Delagi, vice president, TI DSP Systems. "We look forward to a continued relationship with Polycom as they add more features and functionality to enhance the user experience and leverage code-compatible breakthrough DaVinci(TM) technology devices to continue to raise the bar on video conferencing quality and performance."

According to a new market research study released by Wainhouse Research, the enterprise videoconferencing industry will return to its historic growth rates over the next five years. According to the forecast, unit shipments will experience a five-year compound annual growth rate of more than 18 percent while average selling prices are expected to stabilize across all product lines. The report forecasts that the market for room videoconferencing systems will grow from approximately $645 million in 2004 to nearly $1.2 billion in 2009. Growth will be spurred by improved performance enabled by, among other things, HD video.

"High definition videoconferencing represents the greatest convergence of price, performance, and plumbing we have seen in 10-20 years," said Andrew W. Davis, managing partner at Wainhouse Research. "HD provides, for the first time, audio and video quality that people have long wanted in their videoconferencing systems. Once users experience the benefits of HD, they will not want to go back to SD."

TI's production qualified and fully software programmable DM642 processors facilitate real-time HD video conferencing and are code-compatible with the entire TMS320C6000(TM) DSP platform. With performance of up to 5760 million instructions per second (MIPS) at a clock rate of 720 MHz, the DM642 processors offer cost-effective solutions to high-performance DSP programming challenges. For the Polycom HDX 9000 series video conferencing systems, multiple DM642 processors perform video compression to provide unsurpassed video conferencing image quality with 720p HD video (1280 x 720 at 30 fps) at bit-rates from 1 Mbps to 4+ Mbps. In addition to video processing, Polycom has leveraged TI's wide portfolio of high-performance analog and logic technology, including the THS7303 video amplifier, the TPS40KTM family of synchronous buck controllers, the INA137 balanced line driver and the DRV134 differential receiver.

The Polycom HDX 9000 series are standards-based, rack-mounted video conferencing systems designed for conference rooms, integrated custom-room environments, telepresence suites, and specialized applications. The Polycom EagleEye(TM) HD camera delivers unmatched performance at resolutions up to HD720p at 60fps, and the Polycom HDX platform is equipped to deliver 1080p video resolution. The system supports HD in both 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios without image distortion, which enables customers to use existing 4:3 HD- capable monitors. It delivers 4CIF (704 x 576) video resolution starting at 256 kbps providing extraordinary video even at low data rates.
