University Embeds JReport into iSpace Application to Match Research Needs to Available Laboratory Real Estate

ROCKVILLE, Md., December 11, 2006 -– Jinfonet Software, the leader in embedded reporting solutions for Java applications, today announced the University of Pittsburgh is deploying JReport to better allocate its laboratory real-estate resources for use in research projects. The University's Health Sciences Information Technology Group purchased JReport to enable proper allocation of resources related to research grants received by the university's Schools of the Health Sciences.

In any research enterprise, laboratory space is a critical component. The University of Pittsburgh realized that if its research enterprise is to continue to grow, research space must be matched with the changing needs of its Health Sciences faculty. To accomplish this task the university will use JReport to continually review and coordinate the assignment, renovation and construction of research space and infrastructure within the schools of Medicine, Dental Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and the Graduate School of Public Health.

"The University of Pittsburgh and its affiliate institutions are currently ranked #7 among educational institutions for grants issued by the National Institutes of Health. The university must make sure this research money is used as efficiently and effectively as possible. We've begun using technology more aggressively to track what money is coming in, how it's being used and whether or not the researchers have enough space to meet their needs and carry out their work," said Gwen Pechan, application development manager for the University of Pittsburgh.

JReport will be used within the University's iSpace application – an application that monitors the square footage required for research work. Using JReport, the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor, Health Sciences can compare the amount of available research space against the dollar amount of grants procured by specific projects. This will provide answers to important questions such as: Does the project have enough space? Do the researchers have more space than they need to fulfill their duties? How much space does a department have overall? Where is there open space available that can be used? Is there any shared space?

"In short, the University of Pittsburgh should be in a better position to help researchers fulfill their requirements while balancing individual needs with the overall needs of the department and university," said Fred Richards, vice president of product development for Jinfonet.

The University of Pittsburgh evaluated numerous reporting offerings and selected JReport based on the product's compatibility with the university's IT infrastructure, which is built largely in Java and Linux.

"Many of our applications are Java based, running in a Linux environment. In addition to providing out-of-the-box compatibility with our architecture, we could run JReport without having to run an X11 GUI (graphical user interface). This type of ‘headless' environment is more secure. JReport offered the maturity, support and stability we needed, and after purchasing the product, the deployment is running smoothly," continued Pechan.

The university also wanted a reporting offering that required minimal technology expertise for the end users. With JReport, users can create reports and drill into the source data with click-of-a-mouse simplicity. For example, an end user can create a department-wide report and can then view space allocation for individual members of the department by clicking on relevant areas within the report.

JReport also provides the university with a Web interface for easy access as well as the ability to handle multiple data sources such as Oracle, Access, Excel and data warehouses.

After the iSpace reporting is in place, the university will begin embedding JReport into its application that tracks the actual grants and funds and determines where the funds are applied. This offering will also be used to match staffing requirements to individual projects.
