Using any browser, DoMo makes it possible for users to access a mashup of Web content (news, blogs, podcasts), PC files (documents, photos), and application data (email from Outlook, financial data from QuickBooks, for example), quickly and easily from their mobile phone. In addition, DoMo's open architecture lets third-party developers create plug-ins to applications and Web services, such as online banking, for even greater customization. According to research by Telephia almost 25% of the mobile population today want to use their mobile browser. Unfortunately, the experience of accessing content via mobile phone is hampered by Web site responsiveness, content sites or devices not tailored to a mobile browser display, and the mobile phone itself (i.e., entering URLs through the keypad). DoMo has solved these issues by putting the user in control of their mobile content experience. "We've taken the frustration out of using the mobile phone to access content. Rather than requiring an application on the mobile phone, our users need only visit a single website from their mobile browser to access all of their content -- user-generated, Web, PC, and applications," said Jason Thibeault, CTO and co-founder of GoWare. "We've made a mobile Web browsing system that focuses on a superior customer experience. The user picks the content they want, the template they want, and our system generates a useful and responsive Web portal for their mobile phone ... instantly." DoMo is a browser-based system that includes an easy to use PC-based application that lets the user build, manage, and share a mobile portal. The user can quickly add content from their hard drive, the Web, and from proprietary or secure services (the latter through DoMo's plug-in system). Once the user has created the categories and chosen the content, they simply select the make and model of their phone and a corresponding template, and DoMo automatically generates their portal. To access their portal, users browse from their mobile phone directly to the DoMo login page. GoWare's authentication servers will quickly re-direct them to their PC where the DoMo PC application will serve them their portal. Users can also elect to have their portal available even when the PC is turned off. In this case, GoWare's authentication servers will re-direct users to the DoMo Command Center where their mobile portal has been synchronized. The user can also easily share the content on their portal with family, friends and colleagues, assigning them secure access rights to specific content. "DoMo represents the evolution of the user-generated content experience," said Chris Shipley, executive producer of the DEMO conference. "It puts control of content and experience into the hands of everyday users. The simplicity and elegance of the PC application coupled with a mobile browsing experience customized for the user's handset make it an ideal application of technology to solve core issues with the mobile browsing experience." DoMo also includes an integrated messaging system that allows users to communicate with each other in a shared-portal situation, as well as giving advertisers the ability to send behaviorally-targeted messages to groups of DoMo users. "We believe there is a significant value in being able to deliver very targeted advertising messages to the user," added Thibeault. "We have incorporated an email-like system within the PC application to handle this, so that the user is not bombarded with spam through their email account. In addition, DoMo will 'roll-up' these advertiser messages into the user's mobile portal allowing for delivery of behaviorally-targeted advertisements directly and unobtrusively to the handset." Unlike the competitors, DoMo's open architecture offers developers the opportunity to add customized or proprietary content. For example, through a plug-in library, the user may select Wells Fargo Online Banking as a data source. The plug-in would require the user to specify credentials and DoMo would then act as a "proxy service," retrieving and rendering the data into the user's chosen template. Plug-ins are HTML and .dll-based. Plug-ins allow users to extend the functionality of DoMo without having to upgrade the software. And, although easy for developers to create and launch, plug-ins also represent a significant opportunity for content-owners to monetize delivery to a mobile channel. All of these features are made possible by DoMo's support of multiple open-standards technologies, including XML (RSS 2.0, RSS 1.0, ATOM 1.0), XHTML, WML, and XSLT, to gather and render the user's content into their mobile portal. The mobile portal is pre-generated into WAP or XHTML, and graphical elements are cached into the mobile phone's browser, to increase the overall performance when being browsed by the user.
