DEMO 07 Conference explored mobile computing, the Global Internet community, and sophisticated search technologies

PALM DESERT, Calif., Feb. 1, 2007 -- The DEMO 07 conference wrapped up tonight following a full day of live product demonstrations, industry trend analysis, one-on-one meetings between demonstrating companies and attendees, and the bestowing of the DEMOgod awards. The conference program also included a highly anticipated and entertaining media panel, moderated by The Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg, which evaluated the state of the entrepreneurial economy and placed bets on the most promising products launched at DEMO.

"Over the course of the last 48 hours, the DEMO audience has witnessed 68 product introductions and debated the trends, technologies, and economic viability of those products," said Chris Shipley, product analyst and executive producer of the DEMO conferences. "We've exchanged ideas, gaped in wonder, raised eyebrows, and begun conversations that will enrich our experiences over the course of our professional lives. There is no doubt that the technologies debuted at DEMO 07 will impact our corporate and personal lives for years to come."

In her opening remarks yesterday, Shipley declared this the age of the empowered individual, noting that the tools to create quality music and video, and to reach potentially millions with ideas and creativity, are readily at hand. "No matter what your opinion of Web 2.0, it is for certain that these features and companies impact competitive economics as much as they benefit from them. To you and me, that means we have more companies courting our loyalty by offering slick design and more and more functionality -- all at no direct cost to us. And don't think for a moment that Web 2.0 is impacting only the consumer market. These sites have raised the bar of interface design for every application and impacted the infrastructure that delivers and secures both personal and corporate data assets."

Making Mobile Work

The morning stage program focused on mobility -- both on the infrastructure and support services required to enable a mobile culture and on new services and trends that transform a regular mobile phone into the most versatile computing tool in your arsenal. This morning's product introductions included:

Alcatel-Lucent Ventures -- The Alcatel-Lucent Mobile Endpoint Management System is a secure, always on 3G wireless platform, providing IT managers with complete visibility of mobile computers 24/7.

BUZ Interactive -- GETaBUZ is a creative new way to personalize your mobile phone's voicemail greeting or send a message, fusing the user's voice with their favorite music.

Devicescape Software, Inc. -- Devicescape automatically connects wireless devices, such as laptops, WiFi phones and music players, to hotspots and municipal networks.

GoWare, Inc. -- DoMo is a software service platform that allows users to create and manage a "mobile portal" of PC and Web content, generated through a user-selected template and accessible via any mobile browser.

Nuvoiz, Inc. -- The enterprise-class VOIM Nuvoiz SoftPhone is industry-standard compliant with voice, chat and presence capabilities and comes with management servers for IT managers to monitor traffic and to secure, diagnose and provision clients.

TeleFlip, Inc. -- TeleMail allows email to automatically flow to standard mobile phones with no new software downloads or special handsets.

WHISHER.com -- WHISHER gives consumers a simple-to-use software application that instantly aggregates all WiFi networks into one, free global wireless community without requiring new hardware or equipment.

Information Overload

Following a break in the program, the DEMO audience reconvened to witness the final live presentations of the conference. Two groups of demonstrators took the stage. The first was a series of companies with products that, in various ways, tap into the collective knowledge of the global Internet community. The second group introduced products that use sophisticated algorithms to solve the information overload challenges that our data-rich world presents.

"We need a two-pronged approach to overcome the hurdle of too much information. Smart people sharing perspective, filtering content, and pointing out smart content go a long way toward solving the information overload challenges that we all face," said Shipley. "Smart algorithms will take us the rest of the way, and in the process make those smart people that much smarter."

Product introductions from these two groups included:

Aggregate Knowledge -- The Collective Discovery Service moves beyond search by providing a Web experience modeled on how individuals naturally find what interests them.

Attendio, Inc. -- Attendio is a free event-discovery service that conveniently delivers events of interest via the Web, your mobile phones and calendar programs.

Helium, Inc. -- Helium Debate is a directory of real-world knowledge that combines user-contributed content with the ordering capabilities of peer review, making it easy to gain insight from subjective content.

Iwerx, LLC. -- Sentinel enables content producers to monitor, track and pinpoint plagiarized blog content, not only finding exact matches, but also words that have been replaced by synonyms.

Reveal Technology, Inc. -- Reveal Technology provides a lightweight, robust, self-installing application that allows users to search and share documents and unstructured data in real-time.

TextDigger, Inc. -- Digger.com revolutionizes the Internet search experience by inferring the probable meanings of your query words while learning to judge meanings for future searches.

Trailfire, Inc. -- Trailfire, bringing the value of human intelligence back to search, uses a combination of marks and trails to help users discover what they want online.

ZoomInfo -- PowerSearch 2007 is a business information search engine that crawls and organizes the "Business Web" and then automatically compiles easy-to-digest profiles about individuals, companies and industries.

And In Conclusion ...

Introduced at DEMO 2006 to rave reviews, the closing night media panel has become a highlight of the DEMO conference program. Comprised of top business reporters from the most respected publications, the media panel debates the values of the trends displayed at DEMO and the opportunities that are available to smart entrepreneurs. The Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg moderated the DEMO 07 panel and was joined by Larry Magid of CBS News, Quentin Hardy of Forbes, and Letitia Mailhes of the French daily newspaper Les Echos.
