Haley’s new business rules suite 6.0 maximizes business users’ ability to manage, automate and enforce business processes, policies and compliance

6.0 Release Combines Support for Multiple Rule Authoring Metaphors on a Common Knowledgebase with Enhanced Ability to Create Business Models from Existing

PITTSBURGH, PA, April 09, 2007 -- Haley Systems, Inc., the technology leader in business rules management systems, today introduced release 6.0 of the Haley Business Rules Suite™. Haley 6.0 drives business rule management to a new level of flexibility with SOA-based authoring and gives the business users greater control over managing, automating and enforcing business process, policies and procedures. The new release offers Haley customers significant productivity improvements resulting from dramatic enhancements in the areas of user accessibility, knowledge capture and modeling and knowledgebase integration and management.

With release 6.0, the Haley Suite now comprises three main components – the Authority rule authoring environment; the Rules Server 6.0 rules engine and the Haley Collaboration Server 6.0, which provides Web browser-based access to all the functionality of the authoring environment. Taken together, these three components of Haley’s BRMS Suite 6.0 offer an unprecedented level of flexibility and power, supporting:

multiple business rule authoring metaphors supported by a common knowledgebase and single implementation deployment;

multiple, customizable user interfaces, including Web Services; and, the ability to import existing application object models directly into the system and from that to derive a rule-based representation of the business model.

The latter feature enables Haley users to automatically model business logic and generate rules by extracting the business model from their existing application infrastructure.

“Business rule management technologies have too often been seen as esoteric throwbacks to the heyday of artificial intelligence,” said David McCoy, Managing Vice President and Associate Chief Gartner Fellow. “In reality, an explicit (e.g., modeled) representation of business rules is becoming a core technological capability as enterprises seek increased agility from their software infrastructures. Along with the innovations offered by service orientation (e.g., SOA) and process management, explicit rules management allows enterprises to create layers of abstraction in what was formerly a ‘soup’ of system functionality. Creating abstraction layers (e.g., a rules layer, a process layer, etc.) more effectively harnesses the complexity of IT-driven automation and is a key step along the technical path to increased business user involvement in the run-time monitoring, optimization and execution of business processes. Gartner research clearly states that enterprises that ignore business rule management approaches will do so at their own peril.”

The Haley Business Rules Suite 6.0 increases accessibility to rules management for the entire organization in three fundamental ways:

1) By increasing user accessibility options for rule authoring, audit and management with new browser-based clients and additional tabular rules authoring clients;

2) By offering new tools and modules for automated knowledge capture and modeling, including the added ability to analyze and share knowledge visually; and,

3) With superior integration capabilities and knowledgebase management provided by new modeling wizards and enhanced merge and reporting utilities.

Together these three areas of focus help users and organizations to get started more quickly, enable greater knowledge acquisition and sharing, and establish tighter integration of new or existing applications – all while minimizing the IT burden of implementing frequent rule changes in application code.

“The Haley Business Rules Suite 6.0 represents a major step forward the advancement of business rule environments,” said Haley President and CEO Hans Witt. “Our approach to modeling in 6.0 enables us to support multiple authoring metaphors against a common knowledgebase and single deployment. This means that, unlike users of competing BRMS products, Haley customers can mix and match various rule authoring metaphors as needed without requiring a separate implementation for each. By enabling business users to develop rules-based applications more collaboratively through enhanced integration and knowledgebase management capabilities – and by adding new tools such as visualization, merge and reporting utilities – Haley Release 6.0 reduces the need for programmer intervention to accommodate change management. This significantly reduces implementation and update times as well as overall application lifecycle costs.”

The Haley Business Rules Suite 6.0 adds the following new features and benefits:

The Haley Collaboration Server – now enables Web access via browser-based clients, such as DHTML Modules and Statement and DHTML Tabular Rules, or client plug-ins, such as Haley Tabular Rules client for Excel, or even a customer-built Web client. A new browser-based rule editor allows users to author and edit rules from any Internet-accessible location.

Haley’s New Tabular Rules Facility – offers a single, consistent spreadsheet-like interface where business rules can be modeled, verified and tested. Unlike tabular rules functions in other BRMSs, Haley’s Tabular Rules is integrated within Authority in such a way as to offer exceptional modeling capabilities, regardless of rule complexity. This enables the sharing of a common language between business and IT.

New Vocabulary Acquisition Wizard and Dictionary Web Service – greatly reduces the amount of information a user needs to enter when creating a new concept. The wizard automatically retrieves known words from Haley’s new public Dictionary Web Service.

New Visualization Plug-ins – make the knowledge encoded within an ontology more accessible to end-users. This allows an organization to more easily and quickly conceptualize the entire ontology structure and the dependency of rules, statement, and roles and to customize reports based on various views of the ontologies.

The Haley Business Rules Suite 6.0 is available now from Haley. The HaleyAuthority authoring tool starts at about $3,000 for a development and test environment, while the HaleyRules engine starts at about $15,000.

About Haley Systems

Founded in 1989, Haley Systems, Inc. is the first business rules management system (BRMS) vendor to address the demanding needs of dynamic enterprises that require frequent and rapid changes to complex business processes and rules. The Haley Business Rules Management Suite is the only BRMS on the market to combine high-performance, rules-based processing with natural English language understanding. Haley customers use plain English to automate business rules in their strategic software applications. By empowering business users to manage business rules and decisions directly from their desktop, Haley eliminates the IT bottleneck caused by dependency on programmer intervention to create and maintain rules. Haley users gain dramatically reduced rule change cycle times, resulting in several competitive advantages, including improved customer responsiveness, enhanced revenue opportunities, faster time-to-market and reduced IT costs. Major Global 1000 companies such as Adobe, BUPA, Cigna, Countrywide, HealthMarkets, Oracle and United Healthcare, as well as government organizations including the U.S. Army, and the Department of Labor rely on Haley products. Based in Pittsburgh, Pa., Haley is privately held, with venture capital backing from Pequot Ventures, Draper Triangle Ventures, LP, and PA Early Stage.
