Quest Software simplifies database code optimization with version 8.0 of Toad for Oracle

Developer productivity and code quality boosted by new CodeXpert and integrated SQL tuning

IRVINE, Calif., June 22, 2004 -- Quest Software, Inc. (Nasdaq:QSFT), a leading provider of application, database and Windows management solutions, today announced version 8.0 of Toad(R) for Oracle, a highly configurable database development tool that is considered the de-facto standard among the Oracle development community. Version 8.0 of Toad for Oracle provides productivity and code quality enhancing features. It is the first database development product that not only analyzes Oracle PL/SQL, but also advises users on how that code can be optimized, through a component called CodeXpert. With this new version, Toad for Oracle now supports more SQL commands than any third party tool in the industry and it is the first Oracle development tool to deliver a Script Debugger that enables users to debug simple or complex SQL *Plus scripts.

"We have been using Toad for Oracle for over a year and its capabilities for data browsing and editing have increased our efficiency in interacting with Oracle. We tried other tools, but have found them to be cumbersome and slow," said Jay Taylor, director of product development, MemberClicks, a provider of Web solutions for membership organizations. "Our production support teams and development teams quickly became dependent on Toad because of its ease of use. All SQL and PL/SQL generated for our production applications are written and tested in Toad. Overall, our developer productivity and code quality have increased significantly with the addition of Toad to our toolkit."

Version 8.0 of Toad for Oracle is available in three editions: Toad for Oracle, Toad for Oracle Professional and Toad for Oracle Xpert. New productivity and code quality enhancing features within Toad for Oracle include:

-- CodeXpert -- The only stored procedure advisor to both analyze PL/SQL and advise users on how to optimize code is available in Toad for Oracle Professional. Seamlessly integrated into the Toad Procedure Editor, CodeXpert analyzes stored procedures against a set of rules to maximize efficiency, correctness, maintainability, readability and program structure. Toad then provides detailed corrective recommendations, empowering developers to write better code, faster. Advice, rules, explanations, suggestions and references are derived from the expertise of industry experts including Steven Feuerstein and Bert Scalzo.

-- Integrated SQL Tuning -- Quest has now fully integrated the Xpert SQL Tuning environment within Toad for Oracle Xpert. In addition to offering SQL tuning and schema change advice through Xpert, a new Index Simulator emulates the effects of creating an index with no impact to the target system. The new SQL Tuning component shortens tuning time for developers and DBAs, while ensuring better performing applications.

-- A SQL Execution Engine -- Version 8.0 of Toad for Oracle includes tools for all roles that work on the database. By providing a compatible and supportive Oracle SQL execution engine, Toad for Oracle supports more SQL commands than any third party tool in the industry. Toad for Oracle Professional is also the first and only development tool to deliver a Script Debugger for Oracle, enabling users to debug simple or complex SQL *Plus scripts.

-- An Enhanced User Interface -- Version 8.0 of Toad for Oracle offers a streamlined user interface which helps to speed user productivity.

"Quest Software continues to support new and advanced Oracle features and functions with Toad for Oracle. We created the revolutionary CodeXpert within Toad to provide developers with a technical reference that reliably answers up to 80 percent of a PL/SQL developer's daily questions. This rapidly accelerates PL/SQL development," said Steven Feuerstein, senior technology advisor for Quest Software and considered one of the world's leading experts on the Oracle PL/SQL language. "Toad for Oracle's new CodeXpert also provides a status window that displays the rules that have been passed, flagged or ignored. Plus, management reports deliver metrics on code complexity using industry-approved standards."
