Teragram selected by Tribune Interactive to provide text mining technologies for national print and television websites

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., June 16, 2008 -— Teragram, a SAS company and the leading provider of multilingual natural language processing technologies, has been selected by Tribune Interactive (TI), a division of Tribune Company, to supply taxonomy management, automatic metadata generation and entity and events extraction technology. TI feeds content from Tribune Company’s various newspaper and TV properties to websites in 20 major U.S. markets — including 10 of the top 12 newspapers such as the L.A. Times, Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun and Newsday.

TI is using Teragram’s full linguistics suite to automate the organization of electronic documents within its network of news websites. For example, documents on each of the Topic Galleries are aggregated by running the content through both Teragram’s TK240 Taxonomy Manager and Semantic Term Manager. These tools help classify content and tag it, as well as define key taxonomies for large amounts of data. Noting the large quantity of consumer participation on the Internet, TI is also tagging user–generated content such as blogs, photos and comments.

Teragram’s technology is also helping TI’s sites’ search engine optimization, which is a key component for the company’s advertisement–driven model. For example, an article with the headline “Arnie Drives the Car of the Future” does not have the keywords or metatags necessary to appear in major search engines. When that headline is run through Teragram’s tools and “Arnie” is defined as “Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger” and “Car of the Future” is tagged as a “hybrid” car, the headline will then have the rich content needed to appear on major search engines.

“Time is of the essence when breaking news hits and websites must post a journalist’s story,” said Yves Schabes, president and co–founder of Teragram. “News organizations need a way to quickly identify new documents and relate them to similar articles to drive traffic to other portions of the website. Teragram allows companies like Tribune to quickly and accurately tag and organize electronic content as it is added by both consumers and editorial staff, with minimal use of internal resources.”

“Teragram’s technologies enable us to define and categorize our vast amount of content, so that we can more frequently surface the news and information and drive page views,” said Brigid Kenney, SVP/GM of Tribune Interactive.
