Midwest ISO energizes its data center with Netezza

North American Utilities Provider Selects Netezza for Performance and Power/Cooling Benefits

MARLBOROUGH, Mass., July 9, 2008 —- Netezza Corporation (NYSE Arca: NZ), the global leader in data warehouse appliances, today announced that Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator, Inc. (Midwest ISO), has selected Netezza to run power grid reliability and energy market performance analytics and usage statistics. This will facilitate enhanced customer understanding, market transparency and more streamlined operations in the recently deregulated and increasingly competitive electric utility industry.

With data volumes growing at a rate of 400 GB per month, performance on the existing data warehouse was suffering and data center space was shrinking dramatically. As the Data Management group at the Midwest ISO embarked on a strategic project to provide a platform that would support near-real-time electrical grid and market analytics to both internal and external customers, the performance of the current data warehouse solution became an obstacle. While looking at potential solutions, the ability of Netezza to deliver a platform that is both “data-center friendly” and able to provide the level of performance required for near-real-time analytics were key considerations in the Midwest ISO decision.

Netezza, a member of The Green Grid consortium, will significantly reduce Midwest ISO’s data center footprint and energy requirements, eliminating the need to move or expand the current data warehouse while providing a significant performance improvement over the existing solution.

“As more and more companies look for ways they can reduce costs and save data center space, while also helping the environment, Netezza stands out as a data warehouse solution that allows organizations to meet their strategic initiatives on all fronts,” said Jim Baum, Netezza’s president and COO. “Our unique architecture leverages energy-efficient, high-performance processors and other components that make us a great fit for organizations committed to ‘going green,’ while the performance and simplicity of our data warehouse appliance provides customers with significant competitive and operational advantage.”

Netezza systems are built specifically to analyze terabytes of detailed data significantly faster than existing data warehouse options, at a much lower total cost of ownership. They store, filter and process terabytes of records within a single unit, analyzing only the relevant information for each query. Netezza has placed the CPU power next to the data, allowing its systems to speed through processes that would occupy most data warehouse systems for hours, or even days, thereby enabling dramatic increases in productivity across the organization.
