from DSSResources.comActive enterprise intelligence gains momentum among leading companiesMIAMISBURG, Ohio, 9/26/2008 -— Teradata Corporation (NYSE: TDC), the world's largest company solely focused on data warehousing and enterprise analytics, today announced that momentum is rising for active enterprise intelligence (AEI). The term refers to an operational approach to data warehousing in which the database platform supports operational processes in real time as well as strategic decision making. A number of companies using AEI will be leading sessions at the upcoming 23rd annual Teradata PARTNERS User Group Conference and Expo, the world's largest annual data warehousing event — held from Sunday, Oct. 12, through Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas. An AEI business environment is built on the foundation of a central data warehouse and delivers detailed visibility to a company's operational front-line employees, partners and customers in real time. AEI systems provide instant insight to customer profiles, supply chain disruptions, inventory status, fraud patterns, package and passenger routing, labor surges or out-of-stock conditions — in fractions of a second. An active data warehouse (ADW) is the term for platforms which operate at the AEI level of performance. "Some business decisions are just too time-sensitive, and the stakes too high, to rely entirely on day-old analytics. For the most time-critical decisions, enterprises require 'really urgent' analytics," said James Kobielus, a senior analyst at Forrester Research, in his August 11 report, "Really Urgent Analytics: The Sweet Spot for Real-Time Data Warehousing." He added that "information and knowledge management professionals should familiarize themselves with the various approaches for adapting their enterprise data warehouse for real-time requirements." Kobielus will be a speaker at the Teradata PARTNERS User conference. Underscoring the fast-growing adoption of AEI, speakers from the following companies will make presentations that represent AEI and related subjects at the PARTNERS conference. Travelocity leverages its AEI technology to enable personalized, real-time customer offers at the web site and personalized e-mails. The Travelocity AEI system manages 1.5 million web personalization requests a day. They'll discuss this at the event. Harrah's Entertainment, the world's largest gaming company with the industry's most successful real-time loyalty marketing program, will discuss its rapid growth and use of its ADW at the PARTNERS event. Gjensidige, a large European bank and insurer, is transforming into an international financial services powerhouse using active data warehousing for customer management. Norfolk Southern, a transportation leader, uses its ADW to empower customers to design and execute their own queries on shipment status and fresh results in real time. Haggen, a supermarket chain, continuously consolidates data from its point of sale systems at every check stand in an ADW to track and manage prices, inventory and customer service. An online payments leader is developing strategies for Web 2.0 analytics and digital advertising infrastructures with automated models for pricing pertaining to paid search marketing. They use AEI for real-time payment processes. The Missouri Department of Revenue is building out its AEI with a web-based end-to-end solution to create, process, manage and perform tax calculations, and track audits in granular detail to better understand the economics driving organizational performance. The FedEx ADW supports a large, diverse and increasing number of users, data feeds and applications that provide real-time status updates on package logistics. A leading U.S. wireless company has rolled out an enterprise-wide integrated intelligence program and supporting forum of users to create shared ownership of its AEI and user access for real-time reporting across a wide range of business processes. They will discuss this at the PARTNERS event. A leading online auction business manages a vast analytical Teradata AEI infrastructure in the petabyte-plus range, which is on a rapid growth trajectory, processing billions of records and page views per day in a global infrastructure, serving thousands of users and analysts continuously. The company will lead sessions at the PARTNERS conference. Other companies using active enterprise intelligence to improve business performance and increase competitive advantage include Continental Airlines, Karsten Manufacturing (PING golf equipment), Bell Canada, Lufthansa, Belgacom, NCR, Nationwide Insurance, Hansabank, Overstock.com and many more leading banks, retailers, transportation businesses and telecommunications firms. They have held sessions at previous Teradata PARTNERS events. At the event on Sunday, October 12, at 2:30, Teradata Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Stephen Brobst will be joined by Jeff Bedell, MicroStrategy CTO, and James Markarian, Informatica CTO, for an AEI session titled "Critical Success Factors: Deploying Pervasive BI." The three CTOs will discuss how an AEI system delivers integrated right-time information in support of operational decisions, and present an AEI reference architecture. "Strategic data warehouses have been supporting real-time operational intelligence at leading-edge technology adopters for years," said Darryl McDonald, Teradata chief marketing officer. "We see this today more than ever because, frankly, today's click-speed business pace requires it. Our vision ten years ago is now driving competitive edge in more mature and advanced installations. Teradata customers are taking some remarkable leaps in their uses of active data warehousing, and the Teradata PARTNERS conference will showcase many of their accomplishments." The term "active data warehousing" was coined in 1999 when a Teradata Magazine article described how a few customers were using data warehouse insights in operational processes. The approach driven by Teradata customers and engineers is today known by terms like "pervasive business intelligence," "operational BI" and "real-time BI."
