COPENHAGEN, Denmark, May 2, 2013 – Napatech, the world's leading supplier of intelligent network adapters, today released the latest brief in its “Time to ReThink” series examining crucial issues facing OEM vendors. In “Time to ReThink Appliance Throughput,” Napatech demonstrates that the latest generation of standard servers can operate with analysis applications at throughputs of 100 Gbps off-line and 80 Gbps in-line.

As data loads and speeds increase across the world’s networks, appliance vendors must consider how to meet demands for more analysis at higher speeds. Napatech conducted two tests, a 100 Gbps off-line and 80 Gbps in-line, proving that development of appliances based on standard servers can be a competitive alternative to proprietary hardware.

In the first test, Napatech used five NT20E2 adapters with a Dell PowerEdge R720 server. Five packet capture applications were initiated in order to simulate a typical appliance application. The applications could process all data in real time with full 100 Gbps throughput and no packet loss, even when the data was comprised of 64 byte frame traffic.

In a second, more challenging test, Napatech collaborated with a major Asian appliance vendor to test the throughput of the R720 with four NT40E2-4 adapters in an in-line scenario. This test resulted in 80 Gbps full duplex performance with no packet loss—again, even when the data was fully comprised of 64 byte frames. In both demonstrations, the CPU load was below 6% for typical network traffic, leaving more power for advanced processing.
