Air Education and Training Command standardizes on Cognos enterprise business intelligence

United States Air Force Leverages Cognos BI Solutions for Improved Student and Program Administration

BURLINGTON, Mass., April 5, 2005 -- Cognos (Nasdaq: COGN; TSX: CSN), the world leader in enterprise business intelligence and corporate performance management (CPM), announced today that the Air Education and Training Command (AETC), the recruitment, training and education organization within the U.S. Air Force, is standardizing on the Cognos Enterprise Business Intelligence Series to enable integrated online reporting, stronger data analysis, and more efficient program planning.

Each year, the AETC delivers military, technical and flying training to up to 75,000 Air Force enlisted students from across the U.S. and abroad. With Cognos PowerPlay(TM), the world-leading online analytical processing (OLAP) software, training managers and instructors at each of the AETC bases are able to easily drill into student and course program data, analyzing historical trends and other factors to better plan course curricula and staffing requirements. Senior AETC officers benefit from a global view of student and course data across all military training bases, enabling them to make more informed decisions on program funding, and accurately forecast short- and long-term recruitment requirements.

"Our challenge was getting critical data out of the main administration systems and into the field where a lot of the analysis and day-to-day management take place," said Captain Jeff Owen, program manager of the Technical Training Management System (TTMS) integration and sustainment initiative. "Cognos provided a solution that empowers staff at all levels with the information they need to do their jobs."

"The AETC is the first organization to impact the lives and careers of United States Air Force members. This is a responsibility we take very seriously. To that end, we are committed to regularly evaluating the way we deliver and manage our training and education programs, in the spirit of producing qualified, professional airmen," added Colonel Greg Neubeck, of the Air Education and Training Command. "Cognos Business Intelligence helps us better mobilize student training, align budget resources and adhere to Air Force recruitment strategies."

Building off this success, the AETC will soon implement Cognos ReportNet(TM). As the centerpiece within the Cognos Enterprise BI Series, which includes Cognos PowerPlay, Cognos ReportNet is a broad-scale business and production reporting solution that will enable AETC staff to capitalize on true self-service enterprise reporting, including streamlined drag-and-drop report authoring and interactive information delivery and report distribution.

"Defense organizations need to drive high levels of mission-critical performance while being responsive to rapid and continuous change," said Terence Atkinson, director of public sector solutions at Cognos. "For the first time, AETC has true visibility across their training and education services, helping to assure that the Air Force is capable and ready, today and in the future. Cognos recognizes the importance of AETC's mandate, and is proud to have gained their trust in standardizing their student and program administration on our leading-edge Business Intelligence series."

Cognos' industry-leading solutions have helped organizations within the U.S. military increase organizational performance, enhance operational readiness and improve mission effectiveness. Cognos can be found in such leading organizations as U.S. Army Reserve, U.S. Marine Corps, and U.S. Coast Guard.
