Hughes Supply selects Teradata to provide enterprise-wide data visibility; move to data warehousing driven by senior executives

Initial Application Addresses Loyalty Program

ORLANDO, Fla., May 25, 2005 -- Hughes Supply Inc. (NYSE:HUG), a leader in the distribution of construction, repair and maintenance products, has announced the deployment of data warehouse technology solutions from Teradata, a division of NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR). The new system enables the company to boost data capacity, providing Hughes with better customer, vendor and product insight across its product lines.

Hughes Supply's various information technology (IT) initiatives are key elements of its strategic focus on developing best-in-class operations. The IT group has been concentrating its efforts on deploying and supporting a new point-of-sale and distribution operating platform, along with other transactional software, resulting in a need for increased database capacity. Management understood that to move to the next level of analyses - to improve business integration and increase profitability - the company had to address the data volume issue.

"Teradata allows us to take the vast amount of data generated by our transactional systems and generate decision analysis to fundamentally change the way we look at customer and vendor relationships," said David Bearman, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Hughes Supply.

Hughes Supply selected Teradata as its vendor after an extensive search process in 2004, and a Teradata Data Warehouse and the Teradata Logical Data Model went live in the first quarter of 2005. The initial business solution the company implemented, supports E-wards, the distributor's manufacturer-funded, points-based customer loyalty program, and is already helping to boost participation levels.

"We are very excited about our innovative E-wards program and what it can do for our customers and our company. There were many reasons we chose Teradata, but one primary reason was that the design and architecture of the Teradata products allow our users to focus on solving business problems, rather than working around the technology limitations of multiple products," said Thomas M. Ward, II, senior vice president and chief information officer of Hughes Supply.

With the initial project successfully underway, business users and the IT team at Hughes are planning a second project, which could address vendor management, or customer and product visibility across the enterprise. As with the loyalty program, Teradata will provide professional services to support the effort.

"Hughes has made tremendous progress over a very short period, which is a tribute to the company's vision and the support senior managers continue to provide. As it is expanded to deliver better information faster and more extensively, the data warehouse will provide the company with even greater benefits in the future, and Teradata is pleased to be a part of it," said Rocky Blanton, Teradata vice president for the Americas region.
