Balanced Scorecard Collaborative teams with Cognos for Office of Strategy Management Program

Global partnership on executive education and organizational development program helps members make strategy execution a core competency

Lincoln, MA—July 13, 2005— Balanced Scorecard Collaborative (BSCol), a Palladium company, today announced that it is teaming with Cognos (NASDAQ: COGN; TSX: CSN) to promote the BSCol’s Office of Strategy Management (OSM) North American and European programs for 2005-2006.

The OSM program was developed by Drs. Robert Kaplan and David Norton and their team at BSCol to address the fact that organizations often fail at strategy execution due to diffuse and uncoordinated strategy execution processes and responsibilities.

The program will focus on the development of a new profession, the Strategy Management Officer (SMO), a role that is rapidly emerging around the practice of strategy management. To achieve breakthrough results, companies must manage and execute their strategies successfully and make strategy execution a core competency within their organizations. The role of the strategy management officer would continually manage and support this process.

“Most organizations can describe their strategy, but they don’t know how to manage and execute strategy, which is critical to achieving results,” said Randall H. Russell, Director of Research at Balanced Scorecard Collaborative. “By creating an SMO position, you have someone at the executive level to focus on the cross-functional business processes required to execute strategy, to sustain the benefits, and make strategy execution a permanent, enduring competency within your organization. We are delighted that Cognos is sponsoring and actively participating in the OSM program that will bring the science of strategy execution to a new level.”

BSCol research indicates that linking strategy execution to corporate goals and overall performance is a major challenge for many organizations:

  • 67% of HR and IT organizations are not aligned with strategy;
  • 85% of exec teams spend less than one hour per month discussing strategy;
  • 60% do not link budgets to strategy;
  • 70% of middle managers do not have incentive compensation linked to strategy

The OSM program is designed to help organizations learn how to effectively overcome these challenges. It consists of a community of executive peers interested in building an Office of Strategy Management within their organizations. The BSCol team will provide members of the program with:

  • unique management process expertise;
  • the ability to build their strategy management organization; create a roadmap to make strategy execution a core competency, and sustain results over time.

“Our deep involvement with this effort reflects our organizational commitment to a growing market requirement,” said Rob Rose, Chief Strategy Officer, Cognos and OSM working group member. “Strategy execution has long been a core competency of our company. We believe the office of strategy management is an extremely important cross-functional role that leading companies are embracing to reconcile fragmented strategy management processes enabled by planning, scorecarding, reporting, and analysis capabilities into a coherent and sustainable performance management system. We are looking forward to working closely with the BSCol and OSM member organizations to help advance this new era of strategy management within the enterprise.”
