BUPA selects Teradata for business intelligence platform

LONDON & DAYTON, Ohio, Nov. 4, 2005 -- International health care organization BUPA has selected Teradata, a division of NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR), as its data warehousing partner. BUPA, with 7.8 million customers in 180 countries, is implementing a Teradata(R) enterprise data warehouse to help reduce IT infrastructure complexity and costs, as well as improve customer service. BUPA selected Teradata following a competitive evaluation process.

The Teradata data warehouse will become both the central repository and analytical engine for all of BUPA's management, operational and customer information. Implementation of the one-terabyte data warehouse began in February 2005 as the first part of a three-phase project. Phase two will concentrate on making information available to BUPA's business-to-business operations with phase three delivering information to consumer-facing teams.

"With both operational and customer information stored in one central repository, BUPA can more easily manage, access and analyze that information for faster, more informed decision-making and improved customer service," commented John Lister, chief information officer of BUPA. "In addition, by consolidating and simplifying our business intelligence platform onto a single enterprise data warehouse, we believe we can realize significant cost savings and operational efficiencies across the organization."

The new data warehouse will enable BUPA to streamline operations and boost efficiency across a number of areas, including customer relationship management, service performance and profitability analysis, financial management, quality management and case management. For example, the ability to analyze performance and customer satisfaction across hospitals will help BUPA to better identify service issues and, consequently, improve the patient experience.

"Private health care is changing dramatically with increasing competition, a greater variety of health care plans and options, rising costs and more intense regulations. The way BUPA manages, analyzes and distributes information across the organization will be key to outperforming the competition," said Chris Armitage, Teradata's UK managing director. "BUPA's investment in a Teradata enterprise data warehouse will support this culture of information discovery, while simultaneously reducing infrastructure complexity and costs."
