Wonderware Plant Intelligence Solutions enhance management of factory operations at Elk; roofing shingle manufacturer uses Wonderware to improve product quality, lower operating costs

LAKE FOREST, Calif., June 2, 2004 -- Wonderware, a business unit of Invensys Systems Inc., today announced that Elk, a leading manufacturer of roofing shingles, has implemented Wonderware's plant intelligence solutions to manage a variety of manufacturing functions ranging from product manufacturing and quality control, to systems safety and maintenance.

A $500 million company with facilities throughout the United States, Elk runs a highly automated facility which operates 24/7 in Shafter, Calif. using Wonderware's InTouch, IndustrialSQL Server and ActiveFactory application. Elk also plans to roll out Wonderware software to its other facilities nationwide.

According to Paul Rogers, systems engineer at Elk's Shafter facility, Wonderware has had a significant impact on overall production efficiencies and product quality control. Positive results have been especially achieved with the use of the IndustrialSQL Server real-time plant historian and its related plant intelligence applications.

"The installation of the IndustrialSQL Server historian has proved to be an invaluable tool to us throughout the organization," Rogers said. "We use it to perform troubleshooting on the factory line, assist with preventive maintenance and identify opportunities for quality and production control improvements."

As a real-time plant historian, IndustrialSQL Server software provides the backbone for Wonderware's plant intelligence solutions. The IndustrialSQL Server historian and associated data analysis tools provide plant decision-makers with immediate access to detailed, real-time plant information, which leads to actionable plant intelligence. The IndustrialSQL Server historian automatically acquires real-time production data at high speeds, at full resolution and from multiple simultaneous data sources, and combines them to provide a complete, real-time picture of a plant's processes.

"With IndustrialSQL Server software, Elk can now collect data from 6,500 points every two seconds and keep more than two years of data which can be accessed at any given time to assess the plant's productivity levels," Rogers said. "With this deep visibility into both current and historical information, subtle process inefficiencies and product quality problems can be identified and corrected immediately."

Elk also uses Wonderware's ActiveFactory, another key component of its plant intelligence solution which maximizes the value of data stored in IndustrialSQL Server. ActiveFactory enables Elk managers and executives to easily access plant and process data. ActiveFactory disseminates information across a network, intranet or the Internet and provides trending data analysis over time, easy numerical data analysis using Microsoft Excel, comprehensive data reporting using Microsoft Word, and ad hoc access to plant floor historical and real-time information.

In addition, Elk is using Wonderware's InTouch HMI software for visualization and industrial process control to manage its manufacturing operations. InTouch enables users to quickly create and deploy customized applications that connect and deliver real-time information. A flexible architecture ensures that an InTouch application will meet current needs and scale to accommodate future requirements, while retaining the initial engineering effort. In addition, InTouch applications can be accessed from mobile devices, thin clients, computer nodes and over the Internet.
