from DSSResources.comFreight Handlers, Inc. selects Epson and Hand Held Products to automate warehouse-to-supermarket distributionLONG BEACH, Calif., Oct. 4, 2006 -- Today Epson, a leading supplier of value-added Point of Sale (POS) solutions, and Hand Held Products, a leader in image-based data collection systems for mobile applications, announced that Freight Handlers, Inc. (FHI) has rolled out Epson Mobilink(TM) wireless POS printers and Hand Held Dolphin(R) 7900 Mobile Computers to improve productivity and automate its warehouse-to-supermarket distribution process. The rollout began in mid-July with 50 units in 13 locations, and will continue through October 2006, when 175 units are installed in 43 FHI locations nationwide. FHI is responsible for unloading over a million truckloads of merchandise per year to the nation's most productive grocery and general merchandise retailers. With development and integration from Bridgepoint Partners LLC and mobile technologies from L-Tron Corporation, FHI deployed a customized mobile technology solution (FHIQ) which includes a corporate headquarters desktop application, a satellite desktop application and a satellite handheld application. The combined solution allows FHI to manage the business rules for 200+ direct invoicing relationships, administer payroll, time and attendance for over 1,000 full-time employees working in 43 locations, and provide retail clients with interactive reporting that helps reduce costs and improve dock productivity. "We plan to link the product vendors, retailers and carrier circles via our new technology," commented Tal Wall, Senior VP and Chief Administrative Officer, FHI. "By reporting meaningful information gathered from within the distribution pipeline, we are able to increase productivity and reduce costs through improved pallet quality and damage reduction just to name a few." By interfacing with client receiving schedules, the FHIQ system pre- populates preliminary data into the Dolphin 7900 Mobile Computers, which improves accuracy and reduces data collection time. As the trucks arrive at the warehouse, FHI managers retrieve information on the handheld and enter unloading requirements, and the FHIQ system generates a quote with payment collection instructions. Additionally, FHI managers capture valuable information at the point of service, such as customers' digital signatures, load specifics like exact time of service, pallet quality and damage information -- all of which provides essential feedback to clients when assessing opportunities to improve time, quality or productivity-enhancement issues. FHI managers use the Epson Mobilink printers at the point of quote and again upon completion of the unloading process to print a receipt with digital signatures for use in client audits of payables or as cash receipt. "Battery life and environmental concerns were significant factors in our decision-making process," said Wall. "The Dolphin mobile computers and Epson Mobilink printers fit the bill. The mobile technologies have allowed our managers to focus their attention on operations rather than administrative tasks, improving the accuracy and quality of our service." At the end of each day, FHI managers use the mobile computers to verify time, attendance, documentation requirements and deposit preparation, while this data is replicated at FHI's corporate office. Additional audits are performed and data is placed in a database where clients can access it through a web portal, giving them the ability to view and analyze services and measurements.
