Computer Sciences Corporation developing IT data warehouse for Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Aug. 4 – Through a two-year, $21.5 million agreement, Computer Sciences Corporation (NYSE: CSC) is developing the Blue Health Intelligence (BHI) data warehouse for the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA). To date, the warehouse has been piloted at three Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) plans. Twenty BCBS plans are currently participating in BHI, which is being implemented and tested this year and will be fully operational in 2007.

Under the terms of this initial agreement, CSC is designing, developing, deploying and hosting the warehouse. BHI will enable all Blue Plans to capture and access clinical data derived from patient care to enhance best practices, reduce costs and improve patient safety. The warehouse will store clinical records for 20 Blue Plan operations and 79 million people. Expandable to house records for 100 million people, BHI would be the largest data warehouse in the U.S. healthcare market.

“Blue Health Intelligence is a unique resource that will improve healthcare quality through opportunities to share critical, aggregated health information, initially with employers, and, in the future, with consumers and providers,” said BCBSA President and CEO Scott P. Serota. “BHI will be well positioned to play a central role in our nation’s movement to greater healthcare transparency by providing an unmatched level of detail about trends and best practices.”

“The BHI warehouse will strengthen the leadership position of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans in the national healthcare marketplace, and we’re pleased to support this initiative,” said Dan Garrett, vice president of CSC’s Consulting Group and managing partner of the company’s Global Health Solutions organization. “The analytics from this clinical repository will fundamentally change how healthcare is transacted and measured in this country. Our previous experience working with the Blues, along with our in-depth knowledge of the health insurance industry, enables us to deliver results that support these key business goals.”

The work will be performed by CSC with assistance from ViPS Inc., of Towson, Md., for data modeling software, and Milliman Inc., of Seattle, Wash., for data validation services.

CSC’s Global Health Solutions practice is globally organized to serve all aspects of the healthcare industry – provider, payor and supplier (pharmaceutical, biotech and distributors) – in both the commercial and public health sectors. Through a broad range of capabilities, CSC offers consulting and outsourcing solutions that simplify the administrative process; create customized and accessible patient information to create loyal consumers; improve research productivity and speed to market on new discoveries; and improve clinical outcomes.
