from DSSResources.comOracle delivers industry's broadest selection of integrated, embedded databasesREDWOOD SHORES, Calif., Dec. 13, 2006 -- Demonstrating Oracle's ongoing commitment to support the wide-ranging data management needs of its customers, Oracle today announced its embedded database strategy and roadmap to continue to deliver significant enhancements to its existing product lines. By embedding Oracle(R) Database 10g, Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database, Oracle Berkeley DB and Oracle Database Lite 10g within their products, Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) can deliver more complete, turnkey solutions with lower total cost of ownership for users. Oracle continues to innovate and integrate these embeddable databases so that they work well together, as well as independently, providing customers with unique and additional functionality. For example, Oracle TimesTen can serve as a cache for Oracle Database to greatly improve response time and throughput, and Oracle Database Lite can synchronize with Oracle Database to enable offline use in mobile devices. Also, Oracle databases are embedded within several components of Oracle Fusion Middleware as well as Oracle applications, so customers can benefit from Oracle's comprehensive and integrated product lines. The market for embedded database software is experiencing significant growth stemming from a diverse range of uses including consumer and mobile devices, desktop and enterprise applications, large-scale networking and storage gear and appliances. To be successful in this space requires a broad and flexible product line. Oracle offers the industry's broadest portfolio of world-class embeddable database products, extending its leadership in the data center for transaction processing and data warehousing. Oracle's portfolio includes functionality that ranges from Oracle Database 10g for advanced relational database features in an embeddable package, Oracle TimesTen for real-time, in-memory relational data management and caching, Oracle Berkeley DB for high performance, embedded data management, and Oracle Database Lite for online/offline mobile data management. All of these products require no human administration, making them ideal for industries such as communications, high technology and aerospace/defense, which have demanding requirements for intelligent edge devices and services. "Motorola embeds Oracle software in more than 20 products, ranging from our Ming Smartphone to our innovative biometric and identify management solutions," said Mark Davies, vice president of Enterprise Strategy & Business Development for Motorola. "We look forward to our ongoing collaboration with Oracle to bring integrated solutions to market." "As intelligent devices multiply, networks accelerate, and data volumes expand, there will be a growing need for embedded databases that run in a lights-out, always-on environment with no administration," said Rex Wang, vice president Embedded Systems Marketing, Oracle. "Oracle is committed to providing customers and partners with the broadest selection of embedded databases to meet the diverse technical requirements of the market." Oracle has formed a new global business unit dedicated to the needs of customers and partners who embed Oracle software into their own products. In addition, Oracle has established several innovation labs to support development and testing of embedded products. Through a combination of acquisitions and internal development, Oracle continues to deliver strategic innovation to its portfolio of embeddable products: -- Oracle Database 10g -- award-winning, relational database that can be configured as an embedded database with no human administration. -- Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database -- real-time, in-memory relational database targeted at the middle tier to support the data management needs of performance-critical applications. Future releases plan to feature greater compatibility and interoperability with Oracle Database. -- Oracle Berkeley DB -- family of three high performance, open source, embeddable databases. New versions of Berkeley DB and Berkeley DB Java Edition were released in September 2006, and Berkeley DB XML 2.3 was just released in December 2006. -- Oracle Database Lite -- complete, integrated environment for building, deploying and managing mobile applications for a broad range of devices. Oracle Database Lite includes a compact, relational database for mobile devices, and a Mobile Server for synchronization with Oracle Database, application provisioning and device management. Future releases plan to feature enhanced synchronization and support for a broader range of platforms. For additional information, please visit: http://www.oracle.com/goto/embedded .
