Intergraph awards University of Calgary $2.6 Million education grant

Intergraph technology will introduce students to advanced use of spatial databases

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., August 17, 2004 - Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial Solutions today announced it has awarded the University of Calgary, Department of Computer Science, Visualization and Interactive Computing Laboratory, an Intergraph Education Grant with a commercial value of more than $2.6 million (U.S.). The software grant includes multiple licenses of GeoMedia(R) Professional, GeoMedia WebMap Professional, GeoMedia Transaction Manager, Dynamo and DynaGEN. The University of Calgary's Department of Computer Science has initiated innovative academic courses and research projects in various areas of computer science. The Computer Science Department, the largest department within the University of Calgary's Faculty of Science, currently has approximately 1200 students.

The Intergraph Education Grant will support the University's goals to arm its students with innovative ways to solve geographic information systems (GIS) problems as well as provide career skills. The Computer Science Department will use Intergraph technology in both undergraduate and graduate courses to introduce students to spatial databases. In the course "Introduction to Spatial Databases," students will use Oracle(R) Spatial and Oracle Workspace Manager and learn how spatial databases can be used to perform advanced spatial updates and analysis within GIS. Intergraph solutions will be used to show how to access and update spatial databases and how to manage topological information.

Dr. Francois Anton, a visiting professor, stated, "Intergraph has been a pioneer in the commercial GIS market on several fronts since their introduction of the first object-oriented GIS. We are excited to use their groundbreaking solutions to introduce our students to spatial technology."

In addition to supporting the Computer Science Department, Intergraph also provided an Intergraph Education Grant to the University's Department of Geomatics.
