Relying on Oracle, Pella has reduced manual processes and achieved greater efficiency within its shipping operations. A family owned, privately held company, Pella is known for its 82-year history of innovation, making quality products and delivering on customer satisfaction. As the company grew and the transportation and logistics requirements of its distributed manufacturing facilities evolved, transportation planning became increasingly complex. During this time of growth, Pella was relying on a legacy load-planning system that over time leveraged an unsupported and nearly obsolete operating system. Additionally, Pella had developed sophisticated and difficult to manage load-planning operations. Consolidation of information from multiple sources created cumbersome manual processes. Based upon the company's history of success with the Oracle E-Business Suite, Pella turned to Oracle to help create an automated and integrated platform to streamline its planning and logistics practices. "As we set out to manage our outbound shipping with Oracle, we needed to be able to achieve our IT goals without incurring cost penalties while maintaining our commitment to on-time delivery and customer satisfaction," said Pella Corporation IT Supply Chain Manager, Peter Genheimer. "Working with Oracle and Oracle Consulting, we were able to design an automated solution that keeps our trucks filled and running on schedule while reducing manual processes in our outbound planning operations." Shipping fragile and difficult-to-handle freight that is often not palletized is a freight handling challenge for Pella. Relying on Oracle Transportation Management 5.5, Pella is now able to optimize the flow of incoming products from its manufacturing facilities and synchronize this freight with outgoing loads to minimize freight handling to help protect products during shipping. Additionally, Oracle Transportation Operational Planning, a capability within Oracle Transportation Management 5.5, allows Pella to apply specific business rules and logic to optimize its shipments. "Since deploying Oracle Transportation Management 5.5, we have significantly reduced the need for manual involvement in our load planning operations," said Pella Corporation Logistics Manager, Steve Bowers. "We've also gained greater confidence in the reliability and scalability of our system. We anticipate that we'll see noticeable benefits to our load planning labor efficiencies and are prepared for increased growth in the years ahead." Pella worked closely with Oracle Consulting to complete the deployment of Oracle Transportation Management 5.5 and started to achieve visible results in August 2007.
