Sense of urgency, executive sponsorship critical in improving data quality used in high-stakes business decisions

White Paper Reports That ‘Millions’ Are at Stake in the Cleanup of Information Resources

MIAMISBURG, Ohio, February 29, 2008 -- Teradata Corporation (NYSE: TDC), the global leader in enterprise data warehousing, today announced the availability of a new white paper, “Data Warehouses and Quality: Not Just for IT Anymore,” by the Navesink Consulting Group. The author and Navesink president, Thomas C. Redman, emphasizes the critical necessity of business executive leadership in data quality initiatives, as well as a sense of urgency.

“Data is a business asset, worthy of the same level of attention as people and processes,” said Redman. “If the data quality is high and the data warehouse is trusted by its users, then the business may reap millions from a single, better-conceived, better-executed strategic decision.”

Redman, known as “the data doc,” asserts that “Decision-makers function best when they fully trust the data – and have plenty of evidence that their trust is well-placed.” Redman’s new data quality paper, posted online, provides an overview of approaches for enterprise data quality initiatives, with a section titled “The Ten Habits of Those Companies with the Best Data.” The paper calls for business leaders to drive data quality initiatives, along with information technology organizations, asserting that “the success of most data quality programs extends just as far as the influence of the most senior manager perceived to be leading the effort.”

Recent data quality initiatives implemented by Teradata Professional Services at leading companies have resulted in significant improvements in the quality of information. Data quality is a pervasive issue in most organizations, and it is increasingly important as the volumes of data managed by large institutions skyrocket to unprecedented levels. As government and regulatory requirements increase, data quality initiatives bring significant value to those who manage data and help increase simplicity and clarity while reducing risk.

Data accuracy is an essential factor in meeting the responsibilities of data ownership – and can improve the quality of decision making across the business. Improving data quality enables business benefits such as:

* Accuracy of reporting

* Reduced costs, less rework, reduced cycle time

* More reliable and efficient business processes, allowing companies to make better, faster, decisions

* New methods and ways of working, re-engineering processes, and where advantageous to the business, allowing customers direct access to their data

* Raising collective intelligence while enabling knowledge to be more effectively developed and shared across the enterprise
