Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota BCA receive Government Computer News' Agency award for adoption of the Identix IBIS Mobile ID system

MINNETONKA, Minn., Oct. 1, 2004--Identix Incorporated (Nasdaq:IDNX), the world's leading multi-biometrics technology company, said that Government Computer News (GCN) has recently recognized the Hennepin County (Minnesota) Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension as a winner of one of GCN's Agency Awards for its use of the Identix(R) IBIS mobile identification system. The Hennepin IBIS deployment has been funded by grants 2000-9347-MN-IJ and 2000-9345-MN-IJ from the National Institute of Justice.

GCN is a premier newsmagazine in the government information technology market. The GCN Agency Awards, issued on an annual basis, recognize winning IT projects that (a) further the aims of electronic government by providing substantial improvement in government-to-citizen, government-to-business or government-to-government transactions, services or processes; (b) significantly improve the efficiency or effectiveness of a department, agency or bureau in delivering its mission; (c) solve a significant or longstanding problem in a measurable and sustained way.

"One of our goals at GCN is to recognize leading-edge technology that improves the effectiveness and interoperability of an agency," said Thomas R. Temin, Editor-In-Chief of GCN. "IBIS and the Minnesota deployment is a perfect example of the significant positive impact that mobile identification can have on law enforcement."

"IBIS makes our job easier by giving us access to the information we need - where and when we need it," said Lieutenant. Bob Hamborg of the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. "This is especially true today, both in our cities and at our borders, when it is so critical to know with whom we are dealing."

About IBIS

The Identix IBIS system is ideally suited for every single law enforcement officer who is faced with the complex, daily decisions of assessing a proffered identity. Deployments of IBIS by law enforcement agencies in Hennepin County, MN, Ontario, CA and Portland, OR have resulted in significant efficiencies for officers in the field by eliminating the need to take every suspect into the station for booking just to identify them. Additionally, the current IBIS programs have proven successful in helping to remove a number of suspected felons from the streets. More than 9,700 field transmissions have been conducted to date resulting in over 1,850 positive hits from law enforcement databases and more than 275 field detentions.

Identix' IBIS system uses a proprietary and patented hand-held portable device, called a Remote Data Terminal, which enables law enforcement officers in the field to capture and wirelessly transmit a suspect's fingerprints and photograph for searches against the County's automated fingerprint database. If there is a match, the system returns the person's name, date of birth and mug shot directly to the officer's handheld terminal. The officer can then check the person's criminal history and search for any outstanding warrants using an identity verified through biometrics. If there is no match, the fingerprint and photo files are discarded from the system.

A recent example of the system's effectiveness occurred when a 25-year-old woman - stopped in Eagan, Minnesota, suspected of shoplifting - claimed she didn't have her driver's license and gave police several versions of her name. Within minutes, the IBIS system identified the woman as being from St. Paul and having four warrants out for her arrest for shoplifting and providing false information to police.
