The program kicked off New England Innovation Month by lauding local development and implementation of technologies in the digital industry. Winners were announced in eleven categories, and several "Best Of" awards as well as the PricewaterhouseCoopers Promise Awards were revealed at the ceremony attended by more than 350 industry professionals held on June 2nd at the Marriott Copley Plaza in Boston. "This recognition caps an incredible year of momentum for Vertica so far and we’re only into the first six months…there is much more to come in 2010," commented Vertica President and CEO Christopher Lynch. "I joined this company because I know it’s a winner, but this honor validates that publicly. Further, to be considered, never mind chosen, from a group of highly successful companies like Netezza makes this achievement even more compelling. The judges decided what our customers already know – Vertica is simply the best choice for database analytics." The Vertica Analytic Database is a purpose-built, next generation database that enables organizations to get more value out of their data by offering speed, scalabilty and simplicity. It supports a broad variety of applications and is used by some of the world's biggest financial services, communications, Internet, healthcare and retail companies. The MITX Technology Awards recognize emergent and innovative technologies developed in the New England area, as well as the individuals and organizations responsible for driving these advancements. About Vertica Vertica Systems provides a true columnar analytic database management system that delivers the fastest, most scalable and easiest way to gain business intelligence from huge volumes of data in near-real-time. Vertica has developed a modern SQL-based analytic database with an MPP architecture that runs on low-cost standard hardware. The technology enables companies to gain a competitive edge by querying enormous databases 50x-1000x faster and for a lower Total Cost of Ownership than other solutions. The Vertica Analytic Database is available as software only, as a hardware-based appliance, as a virtual appliance on VMware or online as a cloud computing solution. The technology's unmatched speed, simplicity and scalability are used by more than 130 customers including JP Morgan Chase, Verizon, Guess Inc., Zynga, Capital IQ, Mozilla and Comcast. Vertica is headquartered in Billerica, MA. Recently, scores of new data warehouse databases have entered the market. There are two major DBMS innovations transforming data warehousing: Column Databases Unlike row databases such as Oracle or MySQL, column databases answer queries much faster because they only read the data columns referenced by the query (row databases must scan every row and column in the table). Columnar data is also more compressible than row data because the values in a column are much more homogenous. Column database compression can reduce database size by a factor of 20x, which further speeds up performance and lowers storage costs. MPP Databases Also known as shared-nothing databases, massively parallel processing (MPP) technology allows data warehouse databases to work faster by spreading (partitioning) the data and the workload across a cluster of inexpensive servers. MPP databases can also grow bigger and more inexpensively than traditional databases; just add servers to the MPP cluster to increase performance or storage. MPP Column Database While many of the new data warehouse database products support either MPP (e.g., Netezza) or Column (Sybase IQ), Vertica is the only data warehouse database to include BOTH of these innovations as well as many other innovations like automatic tuning, recovery and high-availability, trickle loading, and just-in-time decompression, etc. As a result, Vertica runs faster on less hardware than any other data warehouse database. |
