The joint survey polled over 350 IT professionals and the following top-line results were found:

Key findings:

  • 39% of survey respondents have Big Data initiatives, or will have by year's end.
  • Another 13% percent are planning Big Data initiatives in 2014.

Of those that have current initiatives:

  • 70% have demonstrated business value such as higher revenues, lowered operating costs and improved customer retention from Big Data initiatives.
  • 57% have driven substantial strategic shifts with Big Data.
  • 80% are bringing existing strategic database vendors (chiefly IBM, Microsoft, and Oracle) forward as strategic partners for Big Data, even though most are also using open source solutions.
  • More than 70% are using open source tools, often with commercial services or add-ons wrapped around them from newer Big Data vendors (such as Cloudera, 10gen and Tableau).
