Cloudant named among 'Who's Who in NoSQL DBMSs' by Gartner Research

Database-as-a-service company cited in August 2013 report

BOSTON, Sept. 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Cloudant, provider of a globally distributed database-as-a-service (DBaaS), today announced that database industry analysts from Gartner, Inc. have included Cloudant in its August 2013 "Who's Who in NoSQL DBMSs" report.

Research VP Merv Adrian and Research Director Nick Heudecker from Gartner Intelligence's Information Management group co-wrote the Who's Who report, which examines prominent vendors and product offerings in the NoSQL space. Released last month, the report is timely, as the NoSQL market continues to mature and enterprises increasingly turn to NoSQL to complement traditional relational database management systems (RDBMSs).

Adrian and Heudecker noted a dramatic expansion of interest in NoSQL since 2010 among programmers and venture capitalists. "Conferences, job listings and inquiries to Gartner reflect this rise in interest, as do partnerships between NoSQL players and established enterprise vendors," wrote the analysts in the report.

Unlike competitive solutions, Cloudant provides a fully managed NoSQL DBaaS. Cloudant delivers high-availability, low-latency access to JSON data with around-the-clock expert monitoring and administration, offloading the administrative burden of operating and scaling distributed databases.

"Beyond our managed service, we feel Cloudant stands out for its database replication and synch capabilities for occasionally-connected devices," said Cloudant CEO Derek Schoettle. "Enterprises are increasingly turning to us to manage distributed databases supporting a new wave of Web applications that require high availability, elastic scalability, and schema flexibility. We believe our inclusion in Gartner's report reinforces our view of the market."
