Teradata cloud for Hadoop: full-service cloud environment that delivers rapid time to value

Reduces the hassle of sizing, installing, and maintaining Hadoop with turn-key solution and services

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Teradata Corp. (NYSE: TDC), the big data analytics and marketing applications company today announced Teradata Cloud for Hadoop, an integrated cloud offering that will make it easier for companies to explore the uses and business value of Hadoop.

More than 70 percent of U.S. chief information officers recently surveyed report they are uncertain about how to deploy Hadoop in their organizations.  By utilizing Teradata Cloud, companies can be up and running quickly with a flexible cost approach, and tools to help load, administer, and manage Hadoop.

"Teradata Cloud makes it easier to get started and use Hadoop for exploratory analytics," said Scott Gnau, President, Teradata Labs. "Our cloud offer is ready when you need it and is available with multiple pricing options. We take care of Hadoop monitoring and maintenance so users don't have to muddle through complex technology installation issues, and can focus on actually using Hadoop for business benefit."

Teradata Cloud for Hadoop is a turn-key offering, consisting of five components:

  1. Cloud Compute Units (CCUs) comprised of engineered hardware and Apache™ Hadoop®
  2. Teradata Viewpoint administration console for advanced system monitoring
  3. Pro-active platform and network monitoring  support via Teradata Cloud Operations
  4. Optional tools for smart loading and bi-directional data movement between Hadoop, the Teradata Database, and the Teradata Aster Discovery Platform
  5. Optional services for Hadoop development, Managed Services, and training

"At a time when companies are struggling to understand and harness the value of Hadoop, Teradata is one of the few companies that has the expertise and experience to deploy truly integrated environments for big data analytics," said Tony Cosentino, vice president and research director for Ventana Research. "The introduction of Teradata Cloud for Hadoop represents the latest important innovation in Teradata's valuable portfolio – and should be considered as a smart way to explore the power of Hadoop in the cloud for quick time to value."

Companies interested in using Hadoop to perform analytics and drive new business outcomes can access Teradata Cloud for Hadoop and take advantage of optional Teradata Consulting expertise for Hadoop assessment, mentoring, training, security and privacy hardening, and Teradata Managed Services for a full end-to-end support experience.

Teradata Cloud for Hadoop customers can also leverage the advanced expertise and experience of Think Big, a Teradata Company.  Think Big's proven Hadoop and big data consulting methodology, hands-on engineering, and data science capabilities can help companies identify and maximize business value from their big data initiatives—whether they are on-premises or in the cloud.

Teradata Cloud for Hadoop will be available via data centers based in the United States in the fourth quarter.

At the annual Teradata PARTNERS User Group conference next week in Nashville, three sessions on the Teradata Cloud are scheduled, including "Moving Data from Amazon Cloud to Teradata Using Teradata's Hadoop Connector" led by Ryan Berti of Teradata and Alpesh Desai of Netflix; "Netflix Gives Analytics in the Cloud a Starring Role" led by Vishal Jain of Netflix; and "Everything You Need to Know About Teradata Cloud in 45 Minutes" led by Paul Barsch and Marc Clark of Teradata Labs.
