Health data migration and transformation - challenges, options, and why you might not want to migrate

Salient CRGT's Melissa Chapman, VP, Health, Moderates HIMSS Chapter

FAIRFAX, Va., Feb. 14, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Health data migration projects are some of the most critical initiatives to get right. Ensuring the highest levels of patient data quality are key but delays can often impact the delivery of healthcare services. A robust data migration delivery strategy is vital. To help prepare agencies for these challenges, Salient CRGT's Melissa Chapman, VP of Health IT, will moderate a discussion on "Health Data Migration and Transformation" at the HIMSS National Capital Area (NCA) Chapter educational program on February 15, 5:30PM - 8:00PM, EST at the Key Bridge Marriott in Arlington, Virginia.

Federal health agencies like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Defense Health Agency (DHA), and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) have a broad range of data collection, sharing, and exploration options when it comes to health data migration. Many agencies have migrated the "old" data to the "new" data structure, and converted "old" terminology to "new" terminology.

"We want to explore what was gained or lost in these migrations in terms of clinical meaning and functionality, and what emerging technical strategies, methods, and tools might allow them to see all data without compromising the knowledge and power of Big Data," said Chapman.

The panel speakers will discuss the risks incurred during traditional data migration and how these risks are mitigated. They will also discuss the value - or risk - of data transformation and they will look at the investments that are needed to manage multiple data structures going forward without migration and transformation.

As a health IT expert, Chapman leads business development strategy and growth in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and health IT market segments. She is the former HHS Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Deputy Assistant Secretary, as well as former acting CIO for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Chapman is responsible for implementing complex technical solutions for a wide range of customers in the health arena including HHS, FDA, CDC and DoD.

Chapman's experience provides her with a unique understanding of Salient CRGTs' customers and shares her insights on Health IT Interoperability with Government Matters and Smarter Health Outcomes with WashingtonExec.
