Cognos to drive performance management at Amazon.com

-- Fortune 500 Company Chooses Cognos for Commitment to Linux, Web Services Architecture, Open Data Strategy --

BURLINGTON, Mass., April 1, 2005 -- Cognos (Nasdaq: COGN; TSX: CSN), the world leader in business intelligence and corporate performance management (CPM), today extended its market leadership in major enterprise accounts, announcing that Amazon.com has chosen Cognos as a provider of business intelligence and enterprise planning solutions worldwide through a multi-year agreement.

Amazon will use Cognos ReportNet(TM) and Cognos(R) PowerPlay on Linux to provide a reporting and analytical platform. The company will also be deploying integrated Cognos Planning solutions for its finance and operational organizations.

"Cognos will provide us with the ability to improve both the collaboration and efficiency of our reporting processes as well as enable a more integrated view of the enterprise," said Ken Collins, director, Data Warehouse, Amazon.com. "The company's commitment to Linux, the solution's Web Services architecture, and its open data strategy were all key factors to our selection."

Cognos' corporate performance management solution is comprised of a comprehensive business intelligence solution; industry-leading software for planning, budgeting, modeling, forecasting and financial consolidation; and the most robust and flexible enterprise scorecarding solution. Cognos ReportNet, which is fully integrated with the Cognos Enterprise Business Intelligence (EBI) Series and with Cognos Enterprise Planning, offers a complete Web-based report and query authoring environment. Its extensive multi-lingual support and modern Web Services architecture meets the needs of today's multi-national, diversified enterprises and dramatically reduces total cost of ownership. Designed to scale to hundreds of thousands of users, Cognos ReportNet draws upon Cognos reporting and query leadership to deliver the next evolution of reporting. Linux provides extremely cost-effective support for that scalability by making it easy to add low-cost, high value performance and computing power to Cognos implementations.

"Working with an organization as successful as Amazon.com is a privilege. As the retail industry faces increasingly intense competition, Amazon.com is a company that demands high-quality and mission-critical performance from its IT solutions," said Dave Laverty, senior vice president, global marketing, Cognos. "Cognos delivers the industry's broadest, most complete performance management solutions, allowing organizations to address the many challenges they face both in analyzing massive volumes of business information and driving that information across the enterprise."
