Basic Information

Now part of Pitney Bowes. MapInfo started as a class assignment at Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in 1985. MapInfo Corporation was founded in 1986 by four RPI students and a former Professor. While originally conceived as a navigational telematics company, MapInfo founders revised their original business plan in pursuit of an even greater business opportunity to provide mapping for the desktop. MapInfo started as part of Rensselaer’s incubator program before officially striking out on its own and establishing its first headquarters in downtown Troy, NY.
