Deployed on an HP Integrity Superdome server using the HP-UX11i v2 operating system, PowerCenter 8 Advanced Edition delivered throughput increases of over two times its precursor, PowerCenter 7. This marks the fourth time in a row that a major new PowerCenter release has doubled its performance advance over its immediate predecessor in an HP test environment, and underscores the capacity of PowerCenter to handle dynamic growth and change in volume, variety and velocity of business data. "The superior performance exhibited by PowerCenter 8 derives from optimizations made to the PowerCenter platform and its 64-bit capabilities, in synergy with advances in HP hardware, operating system and storage performance," said Girish Pancha, executive vice president of products at Informatica. "The ability to deliver this kind of dramatic performance improvement, release over release, is critical as data volumes expand exponentially, load windows continue to shrink, and enterprise operating environments and information requirements continue to grow in size and complexity." As in previous Informatica and HP benchmark tests, the PowerCenter 8 benchmark included loading one-terabyte data sets while performing complex transformations. PowerCenter 8 running across 64 CPUs loaded 1TB into Oracle in just 45 minutes, compared to 95 minutes for PowerCenter 7. Additional tests that targeted flat files took just 32 minutes, a new world record based on published benchmarks. As in past benchmarks, PowerCenter 8 exhibited near- perfect linear scalability across 16-, 32- and 64-CPU HP Integrity Superdome server configurations. This demonstrates that successive PowerCenter releases continue to make optimal use of each CPU's processing power for predictable and cost-effective performance. Specific PowerCenter 8 performance-related capabilities include enhanced exploitation of 64-bit processing environments, increased parallelization of flat-file handling, improved internal data conversion across formats and data systems, and improved transformation processing speeds. Specific advances in the HP-UX11i operating system took advantage of the inherent performance benefits of HP Integrity servers powered by the Intel Itanium 2 processor, including larger CPU cache, along with industry-leading SAN storage performance. "Informatica PowerCenter and HP Integrity Superdome servers are a powerful pairing for addressing today's rapidly escalating data integration performance requirements," said Don Jenkins, vice president of marketing, Business Critical Servers, HP. "Their linear scalability and shared 64-bit processing performance make them a great combination for enterprises looking to leverage the Integrity platform's flexible capacity, secured availability and simplified management." PowerCenter 8 performance and scalability testing was accomplished using a 64-CPU HP Integrity Superdome server equipped with 1.6 GHz Intel Itanium 2 processors. CPU configurations varied from 16, 32 and 64 CPUs for specific tests. Data sets for the tests were generated by the industry-standard TPC Benchmark H (TPC-H) utility with representative business data being loaded into an Oracle 9i database. The SAN storage used in the benchmark study consisted of HP StorageWorks 6000 Enterprise Virtual Array. The EVA6000 fiber channel array provided disk capacity, functionality, and scalability while maintaining high performance.
