Healthcare industry leaders to discuss today’s vital issues at Oracle® OpenWorld 2009

Center for Democracy & Technology’s Deven McGraw to Lead Session for Healthcare Executives as Part of a Dedicated Health Sciences Track

Redwood Shores, CA – September 2, 2009 -- The upcoming Oracle® OpenWorld conference, October 11-15, 2009 at Moscone Center in San Francisco, will feature dedicated programming and lively discussion exploring today’s unprecedented challenges facing life sciences and healthcare organizations. As part of a dedicated health sciences track, Deven McGraw from the Center for Democracy & Technology will help lead a session on “Vital Issues for Healthcare Executives.”

This session will cover the vision, goals, and timeframe for key changes to IT standards, privacy, and interoperability in support of health IT adoption. Meaningful use, interoperability, governance, privacy and security, and performance measurement will be among the topics discussed. Deven McGraw is active in efforts to advance the secure adoption and implementation of health information technology and electronic health information exchange to improve patient care.

She was one of three persons appointed by Kathleen Sebelius, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), to serve on the Health Information Technology (HIT) Policy Committee, a federal advisory committee established in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The session will also draw on the Health Care IT Standards and Interoperability Coalition’s efforts to advance healthcare IT standards to enable an ‘interoperable’ healthcare ecosystem. Oracle participates as a member of the coalition alongside healthcare provider organizations and IT providers.

Also at Oracle OpenWorld, Oracle Health Sciences Senior Vice President and General Manager Neil de Crescenzo will lead a panel on how the international healthcare community can prepare for GS1 standards, including bar coding and demand management, currently under review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other global regulatory organizations. Oracle customers including US Oncology and The Ottawa Hospital will also present case studies at Oracle OpenWorld as part of the health sciences track.
